Travel : The D.C. Metro Experience

Living on Guam for more than half of my life, my experiences with any form of public transportation has been extremely limited. The bus service has never been reliable on island and we have no metro or train system, so I have always been either a passenger or driver of a automobile.

When the friends we stayed with recommended the Metro station, you can only imagine my apprehension to the idea. I think I watched too many movies in my time and everything negative you could think of ran through my head about public trains and late night rides on the metro systems.

The experience however wasn’t all too bad. Durning the five days in Washington DC we would drive to the Hunnington station in Alexandria and ride on the Yellow into the main parts of the capital. Looking at the traffic on the freeways, we actually shaved off quite a bit of time by travelling on the Metro rather than trying to drive straight into the city.

Ignorance no longer!

gasWhen I started driving back in ’93 I recall paying about a buck nineteen for a gallon of gas. A few bucks could take me a long way and I never really worried about having enough money to fill my tank. Living on a small island, two to three dollars of fuel could actually last me a couple of days depending on my driving habits and I never concerned myself with speed, tire pressure, or distances. All that has changed over the past year.

Earlier this evening I was reading the local newspaper online and noticed that the price at the pump rose another $0.12. We are now paying $4.31 for a gallon of regular unleaded fuel and about $4.44 for premium. Even with this rise in cost, it amazes me when I see people driving V8 vehicles and speeding in excess of sixty miles an hour. I guess some folks are still in denial and don’t realize that we are already in a recession.

The Seeker (DVD)

seeker_the_dark_is_rising_ver2The Seeker was just horrible. It felt like a watered down version of Harry Potter that was rushed and unpolished.

I’m really not sure what the producers of this film were thinking when they wrote the script for the movie, but the storyline was horrendous, the dialogue corny and forgettable, and the script was so fragmented and rushed, it felt like I was fast forwarding my DVD player and missing essential elements of the movie.

This film is not even worth a rental in my honest opinion. Maybe a group of young children might find some enjoyment from this film, but anyone who has watched Harry Potter or Chronicles of Narnia will probably feel that this film was a total ripoff of the former films mentioned without the great story and special effects.

Avoid this movie at all costs.
