Seven Pounds (Theaters)

The Pursuit of Happyness was such a huge success that it didn’t surprise me when I found out Will Smith would be teaming up with director Gabriele Muccino for a second run at the box office.

Although Seven Pounds started out fairly slow and had a few obscure scenes, as it progressed and unraveled itself it turned out to be an excellent film that most moviegoers will not easily forget.

The cast was really what made this film work. Will Smith, Rosario Dawson, Barry Pepper and Woody Harrelson all put on outstanding performances in this feature and it would actually surprise me if Seven Pounds were not nominated for several awards by the start of the new year.

I’d would have liked to go a little more into depth with the storyline, but I think I would give away a little too much and ruin the film for alot of readers here. The secretive and ambiguous nature of this film definitely was the reason why it was so special for me and I’m sure its will be that way for others who have yet to see it.

On a final note, just be sure to bring alot of tissue if you decide to catch this in theaters. I won’t say much except that the film definitely toys with your emotions and its definitely a film to be viewed with a spouse or significant other.

Hancock (Theaters)

hancockWill Smith has always been one of my favorite actors to watch on the bigscreen. Since his appearance as Mike Lowrey in Bad Boys back in ’95, I have loyally watched every film he has appeared in. Unfortunately, Smith chose the wrong film to star in this year. During a summer where blockbuster superhero films have dominated the box office, Hancock completely fumbled and flopped.

The premise of the storyline was a really promising one. Something out of the box and different from the rest. However, with such poor execution and a lack of an antagonist for that true superhero experience, this film was just not very good.

I thought Smith did his best to make the film as entertaining as possible, but even with his charm and genuine humor, he could not save it from mediocracy. I would rank Hancock right there beside Wild Wild West. One of Smith’s missteps throughout his otherwise phenomenal career.

I am Legend (Theaters)

i_am_legend_ver4Based on a novel by Richard Matheson, I am Legend is a story about the lone survivor of an apocalypse caused by a pandemic of bacteria which mutate men into monsters.

The film starts out wonderfully silent. In the opening sequence, we witness a world in utter ruins and completely void of any human existence. Looking at the city of New York empty and void of human life leaves you completely awestruck. You wonder how such a powerful nation could be completely terminated by something so tiny and insignificant.

Will Smith who stars in the film continues his streak of superb acting and strong performances. It was not his best performance, (I save that for The Pursuit of Happyness), but he seemed to put his whole heart into it as he spoke basically to himself for three quarters of his dialogue. What the film lacked in character development was made up by Smith’s emotions and overall demeanor throughout the movie.

The storyline was dull however and I would have liked to have more of a background as to why Smith was chosen to stop the virus, how the virus got airborne, and how he survived when the millions of others did not. Instead, the film focuses much more on Smith’s quest to find a cure to the infection and his daily routines as he scours New York for food and other possible human life.

Overall this film was a good one. Although the story was not very strong, it was quite entertaining and worth a weekend at the matinée.

Synopsis:

Robert Neville is a brilliant scientist, but even he could not contain the terrible virus that was unstoppable, incurable, and man-made. Somehow immune, Neville is now the last human survivor in what is left of New York City and maybe the world. For three years, Neville has faithfully sent out daily radio messages, desperate to find any other survivors who might be out there. But he is not alone. Mutant victims of the plague — The Infected — lurk in the shadows… watching Neville’s every move… waiting for him to make a fatal mistake. Perhaps mankind’s last, best hope, Neville is driven by only one remaining mission: to find a way to reverse the effects of the virus using his own immune blood. But he knows he is outnumbered… and quickly running out of time.
