Eastbound & Down (HBO)

East Bound & Down is one of those shows that just doesn’t give a shit about anything as long as it gets a laugh. This happens to be right up my alley. I first read about the show before it started airingon HBO. It is created by Jody Hill (Foot Fist Way, Observe & Report), Will Ferrell, and Danny McBride. Anyone familiar with their brand of comedy will instantly be a fan of East Bound and Down.

Mc Bride plays the lead role as Kenny Powers, a washed up major leauge pitcher who finds himself strapped for cash and has to move back to his hometown and work at the local middle school as a substitute P.E. teacher. In his mind, Powers still believes he is a genuine superstar and he treats everyone else as if they are beneath him. The show is flat out hilarious. It may be very offensive to some people, but those who can appreciate it at face value will be able to enjoy some serious laughs.

This is by far one of the funniest shows I have seen in a long time. If there is an “asshole” reaction to a situation, you can bet that Kenny Powers chooses that option. For those who enjoy a good laugh, I recommend checking this show out.

Land of the Lost (Theaters)

While I didn’t go into the theater wanting to watch this movie, by the time it was over I was pretty satisfied. I didn’t expect much, if anything at all, going in to watch this movie but I found myself pretty surprised at not only how funny it was, but also how mature the humor in this film is.  This flick is not for everyone and your enjoyment of this movie depends largely on one critical factor- do you like Will Ferrell?  If you don’t, Land of the Lost will be an extremely painful experience for you.

Will Ferrell’s humor pretty much dominates the entire movie from beginning to end. This is not exactly a good or bad thing, but there are definite moments in the film where his humor struggles to keep things together.  There are also some straight up hilarious moments in this movie that really had me busting up.  While this movie is marketed as a kid friendly flick, there were enough awkward sexual and drug references in the film that you may have to explain to any young viewers you watch this movie with. Other than a few goofy scenes, the majority of the humor in this flick is aimed at adults, which is a pretty good thing.

Ferrell is given excellent support int he form of reluctant sidekicks Danny Mc Bride and Jorma Taccone. Mc Bride is instantly recognizable in his trademark beard and mullet. McBride plays well off of Ferrell, and similar to Ferrell, if you enjoy McBride’s humor you will like this film. Taccone is unrecognizable as the primate “Cha-ka”, but manages to provide some of the most solid laughs of the entire flick. The film almost comes off as a crazy road trip type movie by the time everything is said and done.

Land of the Lost is definitely not the best movie of the summer, probably not even the best movie of the week. It is however, pretty damn entertaining. If you like Ferrell’s movies, this one will not disappoint. Ferrell and McBride’s chemistry is pretty spot on. If you’ve seen all the other major flicks out right now and are looking for some time to kill in a theater, check out this movie.

Step Brothers (DVD)

I first saw this movie in theaters when it came out and I laughed from the beginning to the end to the short part at the end of the credits.  Was the movie stupid? yes. Was it juvenile? yes. Was it laugh until your cheeks hurt hilarious? yes.

I usually find Will Ferrell’s movies pretty funny the first time and then they start to grow on me more and more as I begin to appreciate the humor he is going for with each film. With this one, I found it to be hilarious from the start. Watching it on DVD was even better since I was able to catch alot of the jokes I missed from everyone cracking up in the theater.  While I understand his humor may not appeal to everyone, there is enough funny stuff in this movie to get a laugh out of even the most hardened Ferrell critics.  While the movie wasn’t exactly innovative, it did accomplish its mission of being insanely funny. Without giving too much away, it also happens to feature one of the best and funniest ending fight scenes ever.

Perhaps one of the best indicators of a good comedy is how quotable the movie is. How many lines you can bust out from the movie that not only people who are familiar with the movie will find funny, but those who didn’t may laugh also. Step Brothers has quotes up the ying yang. There has been a recent boom in hilarious”R” rated comedies coming out in the past few years and Step Brothers definitely keeps this trend moving in the right direction. Fans of comedy should definitely check this one out.
