Resident Evil 5 (PS3, Xbox360)

I was first introduced to the Resident Evil series with RE2.  Up until then all I heard about was how great the first game was.  Resident Evil 2 lived up to all of the hype and more. At this time the survival horror genre was brand spanking new, with the RE series blazing the way. The fixed camera angles that prevented you from seeing what was coming next combined with the uncertainty of whether or not you would even have enough ammo to deal with an inevitable attack created a tense video game experience like no other. After a few more sequels and spin offs, the tried and true formula was starting to show its age.  By the fourth official sequel, Resident Evil 4, the formula had been somewhat revamped, allowing for a less claustrophobic camera and a greater selection of weapons. The fifth installment seeks to build on the changes from the fourth game while adding some tweaks of its own.  So here we are with RE5. Did it live up to the hype like some of the previous games????

GRAPHICS 10/10

The first thing you will notice about this game is how amazing the graphics are. The level of detail in everything from textures to character models is just straight up impressive.  A lot of games look great but have graphical hiccups here and there or the occasional glitch. Not this game though. The graphics look unbelievable from the beginning to the end. To be honest, the in game graphics always look as good, if not better, than the cut scenes. Capcom games have always been highly polished in the graphics department, and this game is no exception. Resident Evil 5 is arguably THE best looking game on any console right now.

Killzone 2 (PS3)

Killzone 2…the title alone brings mixed reactions from video game fans everywhere.  Some people loved the original game for the PS2, while an equal number of people loathed it. It was hard to find someone who was in the middle on this one. Originally touted as the “halo killer”, the original game seemed to fall a bit short of everyone’s expectations, with the exception of the most rabid Playstation fanboys. The sequel, up until its release, had been touted as the ace up Sony’s sleeve. This was the game that would not only demonstrate the sheer power of the PS3 console, but establish the system as a legitimate player in the First Person Shooter genre.  Was this finally the game to bring the flailing PS3 library within striking distance of the powerhouse action titles of the 360 or the user friendliness of the Wii?

GRAPHICS 9/10

The game has been in development for what seems like forever now. With every gaming conference, Sony would release a screenshot here, a video there, all showcasing the amazing graphics of this game. When the game finally came out, the graphics did not disappoint. The textures are crisp, and the red eyes of the enemy Helghast soldiers eerily glow in glorious high definition.  The character models are all extremely detailed and the lighting effects are top notch.  Everything from blood splatters as your bullets penetrate enemy soldiers to the mist and water effects are executed perfectly.

Grand Theft Auto: The Lost and Damned (Xbox360)

Grand Theft Auto IV was released and people were divided about how good it was. Some people felt it was the revolutionary game they had all come to expect from Rockstar’s series while others felt it had built up too much hype for it to ever live up to.   I fell somewhere in between. Sure the game was hyped up, but the series is one of my all time favorites and so any entry, no matter how recycled, seemed better to me than most other games out now. I played the crap out of GTA IV to the point where I couldn’t look at the game anymore.

About half a year later, Rockstar released its first exclusive downloadable content for the Xbox360 version of the game. The potential of the DLC was enough for me to pick it up and try it out. Basically, you play as Johnny ‘The Jew” Klebitz, a member of the biker gang, “The Lost”.  This is more than a simple “skin” for GTA IV protagonist Niko, this is its own full blown (although not as long as the original game) campaign complete with its own missions and side missions.  The game even features its own exclusive multiplayer modes.
