Pacquiao vs. Dela Hoya in December!

Its finally official! According to reports on ESPN.com, Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao (47-3-2, 35 KOs) will take on “The Golden Boy” Oscar Dela Hoya (39-5, 30 KOs) in what could go down as one of the greatest boxing matches in the history of the sport. Both fighters will meet at a catch weight of 147 pounds which requires Dela Hoya to drop to a weight he hasn’t fought at in close to ten years while at the same time forcing Pacquiao to move up two full weight classes.

Both fighters who are well renown for their success in multiple weight divisions will test their mettle in a battle for stereotypical title of being called greatest pound for pound fighter. Dela Hoya currently has the edge on Pacquiao, owning six division championships to Pacquiao’s five.

The fight scheduled to be held at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on December 6th, has already started a huge buzz among boxing fans around the world and moments after its official announcement, the phone lines for reservations were buzzing with calls.

Personally I think this is a huge boost for the sport of boxing which has been in serious decline over the past few years. With the rise of mixed martial arts as the worlds most dominant combat sport, its nice to see boxing take back the center stage if only for a moment. Although I do have my doubts about Pacquiao’s ability to compete with a fighter so much bigger and stronger than he is, I’m going with my Filipino heritage and cheering on Pacquiao to shock the world!
