UFC 92: Another Piece of the Puzzle

On December 27, the UFC will be one step closer to solving the puzzle that is the Heavyweight Championship. UFC 91 Saw Brock Lesnar defeat the legendary Randy Couture to solidify his contention for the unified UFC Heavyweight title. The other half of that hotly contended title comes down to a matchup between jiu jitsu technicians Frank Mir and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, whose own legendary status rivals that of Couture.

The splintering of the heavyweight title into multiple components is a result of Couture’s dissatisfaction with the UFC as an organization and the fact that he left them with the need to create an interim belt in his absence.  Couture was widely touted as the best heavyweight in the world, second to only Fedor Emelianenko, whose own differences with the UFC practically rule out the possibilities of him ever stepping into the octagon.  Ironically, Couture is no longer involved in the title race, yet his actions were the catalyst for the division between the belts.

So now we are back to the UFC, back to the quest for the title which, in all likelihood won’t resolve the looming question of who the world’s best heavyweight is, but will definitely answer the question as to who the best heavyweight in the UFC is.  Which for many people,  is all that matters.

Fedor vs. Arlovski to head upcoming Affliction Event

The pipe dream involving a matchup between Fedor Emelianenko and Randy Couture seems to be finally over, or at least temporarily on hold. With Couture reportedly heading back to the UFC to fight Brock Lesnar for the Heavyweight Title, Affliction needed to make some bold moves to bolster a rather lackluster card that was reportedly the reason for the postponement of their second pay per view event. Fedor’s next opponent as reported by mmarated.com : Andre “The Pitbull” Arlovski.

MMARated.com has learned that WAMMA heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko will face Andrei Arlovski at the upcoming Affliction show tentatively scheduled for January 24th in Anaheim, Calif. Affliction Entertainment VP Tom Atencio confirmed the news with us earlier today.

Although I really like The Pitbull and have cheered for him on most occasions, my pick for the winner of this fight has to be Pride veteran Fedor Emelianenko. Emelianenko is without a doubt the greatest heavyweight fighter in the history of mixed martial arts and on a personal level, comes a very close second to BJ Penn on my all time favorite fighter listing.

In Affliction’s last event in July, Emelianenko tooled former UFC champion Tim Sylvia and made him look like a amateur. Looking back at the Sylvia and Arlovski matchups, I recall Sylvia beating Arlovski convincingly by strikes and unanimous decision. Do you really think Arlovski stands a chance against a healthy Emelianenko? I don’t think so. Sure Arlovski has a punchers chance, but Emelianenko is too good to get that sloppy. I expect a submission within the first two rounds. Arlovski will try to stand and bang, but Emelianenko is too seasoned for that and will punish him on the ground till he says “Uncle”.

The worlds best pound for pound fighter?

BJ-PennIt has been debated widely throughout the Mixed Martial Arts World as to who is the worlds top MMA fighter. After an impressive knockout win over James “The Sandman” Irvin in UFC Fight Night 14, many believe that Anderson “The Spider” Silva is the best pound for pound fighter in the world. Although I agree that Silva is without a doubt the best middleweight in the world, he has yet to prove to me that he’s the best pound for pound fighter in the world.

Silva, although incredibly successful in the middleweight ranks, has never held a title in any other weight division. “The Prodigy” BJ Penn and “The Natural” Randy Couture are the only fighters who can stake claim to titles in two weight classes in the UFC. With Couture vacating his heavyweight title and leaving the organization, Penn now reigns supreme.

Penn currently holds wins over such notables as Takanori Gomi, Matt Serra, Renzo Gracie, and Caol Uno and has beaten former UFC Champions Jens Pulver (155), Sean Sherk (155), Matt Hughes (170), and Joe Stevenson (155). Penn was even willing to step up and fight light heavyweight Lyoto Machida who is still considered one of the best at 205 although being clearly outweighed by nearly 35 pounds.
