Barbados Isn’t Just About Rihanna

If you had mentioned Barbados as a holiday destination just a few years ago, the Sandy Lane seven star hotel with its celebrity visitors and guests would have been the main topic of conversation, especially as the lowest cost room is still over $1,000 a night. If you mention Barbados today the first question will be about Rihanna and her meteoric rise to claim the world’s number one position as a music and celebrity icon.

If you visit the island, you will need to accept a slow pace of life. The waiters in the restaurant will get to you in their own good time. There’s no rush for anything, especially if you are on vacation. The almost non existence of crime and illegal drugs helps maintain a healthy attitude and outlook on the island.

Everyone Will Say ‘Hello’

One of the best parts about arriving in Barbados for a vacation is the friendliness of the people. Everywhere you go people will talk to you (whether you want to engage in conversation is up to you.) The nation is one of the world’s most polite nations and no-one would consider passing a stranger without a quality verbal welcome.

At just 166 square miles (431km2) Barbados punches well above its weight. Listed as the 200th largest of 236 countries in the world, it attracts over half a million tourists who stay on the island and just over 600,000 cruise line passengers each year.

As a tourist, there are just about all the options you could ask for. If you require an all-inclusive hotel you’ll have a good choice. If you prefer a middle of the range hotel so you can choose where to eat, the options are almost endless. If you want to rent a small room on a budget or the largest villa for your celebrity friends, the selections are plentiful.

Eating on the island is a delight in terms of choice and flavor. Almost all of the world’s biggest favorites are on offer, but not from one of the franchises you might see around the world. There are a couple of US franchises, but mostly the locals can make a sandwich or a Chinese meal better than the franchised units, even if you’re not totally taken by the national dish of flying fish and cou cou.

What to See

There is a lot to see on the island. If your wish is for a tasteful museum then the Houses of Parliament and the Barbados Museum will meet with your approval. If you have a need to see how sugar was originally cut and processed, the Sugar Museum will be a favorite stop. You can even take the opportunity to tour Concorde which used to fly here regularly from London, England.

You can visit underground caves, flower forests and experience a pirate ship adventure. The submarine tour is a firm favorite among visitors, who come from all over the world, with the US, Canada, the UK and much of the Caribbean providing the highest numbers of visitors.

If you want to try surfing, then the East coast waves are exactly what you’ll need, but if you desire calm water, the West coast will be your target. The South coast mixes the two with water safe enough to swim in, but not so calm that it’s like a pool.

The South coast is also home to the country’s best variety of places to eat, the country’s only real shopping mall and a drive in theatre.

You can sit and watch a soccer or cricket match with the locals or hire some golf clubs and play on some of the best golf courses in the world.

Rihanna Might Not Be At Home

The islanders will keep it a secret when Robyn Fenty (Rihanna) is home and you’ll see the pictures of where she went just as she leaves the island for another world tour. Nevertheless you can bump into her on the beach, at the local theatres or in the local fast food diner, Chefette (fourteen diners to choose from). On the island, while the people are extremely proud of her, she can go anywhere and do anything and not be disturbed as she rests from her other job as official Honorary Ambassador of youth and culture for Barbados.

You won’t be looking at Norwegian ski deals if you are considering Barbados because the weather is usually very good. Just be aware that the rain falls hard in this sub-tropical climate, but is usually gone without trace a few minutes later.

Grand Theft Auto: The Ballad of Gay Tony (Xbox360)

GTA: The Ballad of Gay Tony is the second of two Xbox exclusive downloadable content episodes for Rockstar Games’ insanely popular Grand Theft Auto IV. TBOGT takes place in the same universe and same city as the previous two storylines. While the other plotlines seemed to hold back a bit in terms of the level of action, TBOGT is like an adrenaline junkie’s paradise. There is the addition of base jumping, devastating new weapons, and most of all- intense over the top action that the series had previously been known for.

GRAPHICS (8/10)

While the series has never been known for its beautiful graphics, it looks like nothing much has changed. The character models look a bit funny at times, and most of the character movements look clunky and forced. The city, however, looks as beautiful and detailed as ever. The game’s main saving grace (graphically) is how great the city and everything in it look.  The city is so detailed that after playing for a while, you will start to recognize how certain neighborhoods look.  The graphics do a solid job of bringing the city to life.

STORY (9/10)

One of the greatest parts of any GTA game is definitely the writing. While the plots may not be super complex, the characters and the situations they find themselves in are some of the most unique, violent, and hilarious in any game.  The story ties in neatly with the last two episodes, resulting in one grand intersecting plotline between the three games. It neatly wraps up all the previous questions and it happens to be a non-stop thrill ride the whole way.

GAMEPLAY (9/10)

Relatively little has changed since GTA IV in terms of gameplay. Perhaps the biggest addition is the inclusion of base jumping/parachuting.  This element has been seen before in past games like GTA: San Andreas, but it just seems more fitting in the big city playground that this game takes place in. Nothing is cooler than parachuting onto a skyscraper, infiltrating and assasinating everyone inside, then making your get away by base jumping onto a moving escape truck.

One major improvement is the addition of checkpoints within missions. Now you don’t have to start all the way from the beginning if you should die. Simply answer the ‘try again’ text on your phone and you will resume the mission from your last checkpoint. This helps keep the game moving along, while also helps prevent it from feeling to repetitive as you would have to repeat sequences over and over otherwise. This is good also since the difficulty is ramped up considerably in this game. You have a bunch of new weapons at your disposal, but make no mistake your enemies also have upgraded firepower. While little has changed in terms of overall gameplay, this is one series that only needed a few tweaks since the system was already rock solid.

SOUND (9/10)

The sound effects are pretty good throughout the game. The gunshots and explosions are nice and loud. perhaps the best part of the sound is the incredible voice acting. The characters and their voices are top notch. Although most of the voice actors are relative unknowns, they do a great job of bringing Liberty City and its inhabitants to life. The radio stations are also top notch. I don’t really care much for driving around in these games, but I kept catching myself taking the long route so I could hear the rest of a song on the radio.

The background noises on the city streets are also excellent. You could be walking down the street and pass two people having a conversation. You can actually hang around and eavesdrop on what they’re saying. You can even hear people yelling at one another from their cars. It’s little details like this that really make the city feel alive.

OVERALL (9/10)

This game is a true return to form for the GTA series. While many people were a bit taken back by the somewhat slower pace of the last two episodes, GTA:TBOGT takes us right back to the adrenaline fueled missions of GTA: San Andreas. There is also a good variety of things to do in each mission so the game never really feels repetitive. Most importantly, the fun factor that made the series so popular seems to be in full effect with this episode. While the game is definitely driven by its plot points, there is a greater focus on action, destruction, and overal anarchythat seemed to be missing from the previous iterations. Most of all, this game is just flat out fun. While I didn’t spend any time doing any side missions and focused strictly on the story missions, I had a blast the entire time and I honestly can’t think of a boring or lackluster mission throughout the main campaign. GTA fans will definitely want to pick this one up. The price is also a steal, as it is only $20 roughly to download. There is also a disc that includes both The Ballad of Gay Tony and The Lost and Damned for around $40. This is a great option for those who do not have the original GTA:IV disc, as you can play both episodes without it.

Eva Mendes – Secret Obsession Banned!

eva_mendes_dot_com842Personally, I see nothing wrong with Calvin Klein’s Secret Obsession commercial. I thought it was very tasteful and sexy.

Truthfully, its the majority of those responsible for censorship in America who have an incredibly poor sense as to what should be acceptable for the general audience. Yes there is a second or two where we see a flash of Eva Mendes’s nipples, but its hardly anything to go crazy over. They make it sound like she’s doing a public porn movie.

Wake up and take a look at what you have not censored before chastising Mendes for a couple seconds of nipple slippage. I’ve seen some of the most disturbing acts of violence, racism, and sexual activity smack in the middle of the afternoon during the hours in which children and teens are on the tube. Has anyone bothered to fix this problem? Absolutely not. Anyway, for those of you who have not seen the clip I posted it here on the sidebar of his post.

Anyone else think it should be banned? Why or why not?
