After much anticipation, the movie version of the critically acclaimed graphic novel, Watchmen, makes its debut on the big screen. Like many others, I have been drooling over this one for some time. While the majority of the cast are relative unknowns, the most prominent being Carla Gugino and Billy Crudup, expect many of them to blow up after the release of this film. Factor in the fact that Zack Snyder, the director of 300, is at the helm, and this has all the makings of the next big super hero flick. Seeing as how I am posting this a bit late, I actually had a chance to check out this flick and let me just say it is definitely an overload on the senses as well as the consciousness, but in a good way. I know someone is in the process of putting up a detailed review here pretty soon, but I will also offer my take on it but I feel I need to watch it one more time once my brain has calmed down from the initial viewing.

If you take a second and listen you can hear the knees of young girls buckle all over the world as the Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience opens up this week. The movie title pretty much sums up what the movie is about. The brothers sing, girls scream, rinse and repeat. For those seeking a more engaging cinema experience this week, Street Fighter; The Legend of Chun Li opens this week also. The movie follows the storyline of the title character in the SF universe. Perhaps the most interesting part of this film is the casting, which I don’t think anyone could have forseen these actors in the roles they are playing. Kristin Kreuk, of Smallville fame, stars as Chun Li. While I never pictured Chun Li being portrayed by Kreuk, they could have given her a role as a door in this movie and guys will still go check it out. Sadly, I am also a part of this group.
Crossing Over is another movie opening up this week and it features a strong ensemble cast. The movie stars Harrison Ford, Ray Liotta, and Ashley Judd to name a few. The plot centers around immigrants from various countries all coming to Los Angeles and it follows their lives as they struggle to gain their legal immigration status. Judging from the cast and the multi storyline premise, this movie looks promising.

As far as new movies this week, there isn’t much going on. Two new releases, ‘Fired Up’ and ‘Madea Goes to Jail’, open up this Friday. Fired Up is a comedy about two jocks who wind up on the cheer leading squad. From the previews, this looks to be another mindless teen romp. Don’t get me wrong, sometimes those types of movies end up actually being pretty funny. The jury is still out on this one though. It looks like it is produced by the same movie factory that cranks out all of those straight to video ‘American Pie’ sequels. Seeing as how there isn’t too much competition this week, it might actually do pretty good at the box office.
Madea Goes to Jail is another film in the long line of Tyler Perry films featuring the title character. Perry’s films are a bit of an anomaly. Alot of his ideas are lifted straight from other movies and actors, however his films still manage to be pretty entertaining. I have watched most of them with low expectations and have usually wound up pretty impressed afterwards. Despite all his ‘borrowing’, his movies have a sincere and genuine quality to them that seems to translate well. I only hope that Madea Goes to Jail sticks to the tried and true Perry formula and doesn’t venture too far into slapstick comedy territory. Fans of Perry’s work will no doubt be all over this one.
