Speed Racer (2008) 4.5/5

The Wachowski Brothers have struck again! Speed Racer was 100ure unadulterated eye candy. Everything from the bright lush colors, smooth animation, and great action sequences make this film an extremely worthwhile experience and a pure adrenaline rush. My only wish would have been to see this in the IMAX theaters rather than just at the regular box office, but I was extremely impressed with the outcome overall.

Iron Man now ranks at the top of the charts in regards to my favorite Marvel films released to date. The adaptation from comic book to feature film was on the money and it was released at such a perfect time to help kick off a summer filled with blockbuster movies. The film started off a bit slow, but it was needed to retell the birth of a new superhero.

Although this film was far from being an epic, I will admit that I was entertained today. To make it clear to everyone, 10,000 B.C. should be considered a fantasy film and not a historical one. The title definitely was misleading for some, and I feel that those misconceptions about it may have caused some of the more analytical critics to give this film very harsh reviews.

A film that should be dismissed by the faint of heart, Tim Burton’s adaptation of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street was absolutely magnificent, and he brought to life brilliantly the dark and vivid atmosphere that was 19th century London, England.

National Treasure: Book of Secrets was a excellent sequel to the original feature. Nicholas Cage is back as Benjamin Gates, and he along with sidekick Riley Poole embark on another crazy adventure to find a lost and forgotten treasure in the great U.S of A.

I did however enjoy the movie despite several of its setbacks. What saved this film from a harsher review was the cinematography and special effects. The polar bears were amazing and looked ready for war with their battle armor and bold chivalrous stature. The other CGI creatures also looked very realistic and they moved seamlessly throughout the film with their human counterparts.

After a short introduction to the town and its people, the sun sets and the real horror begins. The sheriff realizes his town is disabled from all communication, and with no source of sunlight available for 30 days, these beasts begin their feeding frenzy on the town’s small population of people.

The film starts out wonderfully silent. In the opening sequence, we witness a world in utter ruins and completely void of any human existence. Looking at the city of New York empty and void of human life leaves you completely awestruck. You wonder how such a powerful nation could be completely terminated by something so tiny and insignificant.

The movie has its strong points and its weak points. The weakest area of the film was definitely the plot of the film. It was very simple and predictable. There was really nothing left to the imagination and you clearly knew who was going to win each and every fight. I guess thats to be expected when you create a film based on a video game.

American Gangster certainly did not disappoint me. Although it would be unreasonable to compare this film to classics such as The Godfather or Scarface, I thought it was well executed film, and that both Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe put on Oscar winning type performances.

I read quite a number of bad reviews for this film, and I'm guessing that the simplicity of the storyline and vulgarity of the film was a turn off for some. It was definitely not the funniest film of the year, but it was entertaining and I had some very good laughs out of it.

The Kingdom was a incredibly believable film. It didn’t try to capture its audience through special effects or computer generated images. The movie was essentially dialogue driven, and focused on a strong storyline mixed in with some intense, yet realistic “in your face” action scenes.

It seriously needs to be illegal to allow these types of movies to make it into theaters. They rob you of your money and more importantly your life. Rotten Tomatoes totally fooled me with the trailers I watched on D-Wars and instead of purchasing tickets to Resident Evil: Extinction, I went ahead and purchased tickets to Dragon Wars. What a huge mistake.

Superbad was a decently entertaining film, but based on the ratings from Rotten Tomatoes and IMDb over the past several weeks, I definitely had higher expectations for the screening and left the theater very disappointed. The movie didn't feature anything new or innovative and it lacked any of those "that was fu*kin hilarious" type of scenes.

The Last Legion was anything but epic. It dragged in so many areas and the storyline for the film although promising, was very poorly executed on the bigscreen. The acting was really bad, the dialogue was horrible, and the plot so predictable to the point where it just felt like a public television special rather than an actual box office release.

I still have not picked up any of the Harry Potter books so this review is solely on what I've watched in the theaters. The cast and CGI continued to impress me in this film.

Transformers was my favorite cartoon during my adolescence, and to finally see a live adaptation of it on the big screen was a dream come true for me. I had been eagerly anticipating its release since I read about its pre-production back in 2005.

I thought that the film fell very short of the previous two installments. It just wasn't very entertaining. The first two films had great music, great dialogue, a good plot, and some really comical lines. This film lacked in all those departments.
