The Waterhorse (DVD)

water_horseIt seems like the filmmakers for The Waterhorse were banking on their computer generated beast to save their film, and it may very well have done so. The interactions between the cast and the Waterhorse were flawless, and the film industry has definitely reached the pinnacle of CGI development.

The rest of the film however didn’t fare so well. The storyline was unoriginal and very uneventful, and there was minimal character development throughout. The acting was subpar at best, and unfortunately, not a single scene stuck out in my mind as significant.

Kids however will inevitably be drawn to the Waterhorse as the film progresses. From its introduction, the Waterhorse is a cute and lovable character. As it grows, it gets more and more mischievous, and you just can’t help but fall in love with it.

This film would make a great rental for a family afternoon. There are a couple scenes that may scare very young children, but otherwise its a kid friendly film.

Synopsis:
the-water-horse-legend-of-the-deep-20071207105439409_640wA lonely young boy vows to protect the rapidly growing hatchling that emerges from a mysterious egg found on the shores of a Scottish loch in My Dog Skip and Tuck Everlasting director Jay Russell’s screen adaptation of writer Dick King-Smith’s popular children’s novel. Angus MacMorrow has made a most unusual discovery, and he’s about to find out just how one innocent boy’s greatest fantasy can also be a frightened adult population’s greatest threat. Unable to identify the egg that he found while walking the sandy shores, Angus is even more perplexed about the discovery and the creature that emerges resembles what comes to be known as a Water Horse, which Angus names Crusoe. As the bizarre new life form begins to grow at an alarming rate, it soon becomes obvious that Angus will not be able to keep it a secret for very long, and the young boy will have to do some seriously quick thinking if he is to keep his new friend safe ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

  1. I just watched this the other nice on DVD. I found the movie cute, but like you, saw no significant development in the plot nor the characters. I think the only thing I did like about it was that I immediately recognised Emily Watson (Angus/Kristy’s mother), who played a mother with almost the same attitude in “Angela’s Ashes”.

  2. I just watched this last night and posted my review of it. I didn’t find the last 30-40 minutes to be “young-children-friendly”.

  3. Hi… Yeah, this one didn’t do anything for me. My 3 and 7 year olds liked it, but even my wife was wondering where the story was. –Fitz

  • The Spirit (Latest Theatrical Trailer) -#

spirit_ver10Adapted from the Will Eisner's graphic novels, "The Spirit" tells the story of a man who fakes his own death and fights crime from the shadows of Central City. The Octopus (Samuel L. Jackson) -- who kills anyone unfortunate enough to see his face -- has other plans. He's going to wipe out the entire city. The Spirit tracks this coldhearted killer from the city's rundown warehouses, to the damp catacombs, to the windswept waterfront...all the while facing a bevy of beautiful women who either want to seduce, love or kill the masked crusader.

kimbo_slice_elite_xcI've been in a pick'em league over at S2 to I figured I post my selections here on the site during each mixed martial art event.

As much as I would like to see Kimbo get a loss it wont happen versus Shamrock. Shamrock's going to try and prove a point and stand and bang and he's going to eat fist. lol. Did anyone see the weigh in's for Gina Carano? She had to bear all to make weight!

    My predictions:
    Kimbo Slice - KO1
    Jake Shields-KO R2
    Andre Arlovski-KO R1
    Gina Carano- Sub R2
    Murilo "Ninja" Rua-KO R3
    Yoko - Sub R1
