Eragon (DVD)

EragonI am glad that I listened to the advice of a friend and waited for its release on DVD. Eragon is a B rated fantasy film. It reminded me very much of Sci-Fi’s Original Film, “Dragon Storm“. It had the fancy dragon and some decent special effects, but the acting was horrible, the screenplay was even worse, and a powerful climax was non-existent. It just didn’t deliver to hardcore fantasy film nerds like myself.

I have yet to read the books the movie was based on, but looking at some older reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, its seems as if this film did not do this series any justice. Its a pretty scary thought considering that HBO has just bought the rights to one of my favorite series of books, The Song of Ice and Fire.

As for the Eragon series, I’ll be purchasing the DVD’s anyways. I have so many fantasy movies that this one will be no exception. The film is a decent rental especially if you have children. I’m sure they’ll enjoy the dragon, the fire-breathing, and the magic. Otherwise, if the storyline takes precedence over the special effects, I’d skip this film all together.

In his homeland of Alagaesia, a farm boy happens upon a dragon’s egg — a discovery that leads him on a predestined journey where he realized he’s the one person who can defend his home against an evil king.

  1. this is so cool! you’re a martin fan! my friends and i are followers too. we can’t wait for book 5. i think hbo can handle the books. i’m thinking, since it’s a mini-series, they won’t have to edit that much out. i hope. i wonder how people will react to the incest. haha.

you’re right about eragon. the dragon was seamless and rachel weisz was wonderful as its voice. so elegant. i also liked john malkovich as the big bad guy. genius casting. but as a whole, the movie lacked oomf. i saw it with my best friend and we were practically narrating the story as it went along. jaded fantasy geeks :D i haven’t read the books either, but judging from what i saw, i think it’s safe to say they’re worlds better than the movie. it was just too forgettable. joss stone, though: she rocks :D

p.s. i just realized, john malkovich and jeremy irons both starred in man in the iron mask. athos and aramis. haha.

  3. After reading about 5 negative movie reviews of Eragon, I decided to skip it altogether. I figured it isn’t worth spending so much money over (especially that I’m broke hehe). But then, comparing the movie to its original form of book is really…unfair? Coz we all know that books are better through and through. For me anyway. ;)

PS: So this is a place I should go to whenever I want spoilers. I haven’t watched the latest movies in months!

  4. I don’t give spoilers! haha. Just basic info on what I think about the movie. My reviews are pretty short actually. Not in depth. Thanks for stopping in though!

  5. The books ARE always better. It’s funny because I also read a bunch of negative reviews of Eragon even though I’d heard great things about the book. I’m a big fantasy film fan, but I tend to be pretty critical. I can accept crappy melodrama to a certain extent, but a poorly made fantasy film is hard to watch. That said, I’ll probably check it out. Hard to go wrong with dollar rentals.

  • The Spirit (Latest Theatrical Trailer) -#

spirit_ver10Adapted from the Will Eisner's graphic novels, "The Spirit" tells the story of a man who fakes his own death and fights crime from the shadows of Central City. The Octopus (Samuel L. Jackson) -- who kills anyone unfortunate enough to see his face -- has other plans. He's going to wipe out the entire city. The Spirit tracks this coldhearted killer from the city's rundown warehouses, to the damp catacombs, to the windswept waterfront...all the while facing a bevy of beautiful women who either want to seduce, love or kill the masked crusader.

kimbo_slice_elite_xcI've been in a pick'em league over at S2 to I figured I post my selections here on the site during each mixed martial art event.

As much as I would like to see Kimbo get a loss it wont happen versus Shamrock. Shamrock's going to try and prove a point and stand and bang and he's going to eat fist. lol. Did anyone see the weigh in's for Gina Carano? She had to bear all to make weight!

    My predictions:
    Kimbo Slice - KO1
    Jake Shields-KO R2
    Andre Arlovski-KO R1
    Gina Carano- Sub R2
    Murilo "Ninja" Rua-KO R3
    Yoko - Sub R1
