Miami Vice (DVD)
This film was a huge disappointment for me. I was never a big fan of the Miami Vice television series, but I had expected a far better movie from Michael Mann. Anyone remember The Last of the Mohicans, Heat, and Collateral? All great Mann films.
This film however was totally the opposite of those film’s I previously mentioned. There was no character development, hardly any action sequences worth noting, and it dragged in so many areas it practically put me to sleep on the couch. I have always enjoyed good action movies, even B-rated ones, but this one was just terrible. I can’t believe that with a cast of Colin Farrel and Jaime Foxx, this film ended up this bad.
If your a huge fan of the Miami Vice television series, I would recommend that you skip this film altogether. I think you’ll come out more disappointed than I was. Save your five bucks for a happy meal at McDonald’s. The toys included with your meal will entertain you far more than this film. It is a serious waste of two hours of your life.
Ricardo Tubbs is urbane and dead smart. He lives with Bronx-born Intel analyst Trudy, as they work undercover transporting drug loads into South Florida to identify a group responsible for three murders. Sonny Crockett is charismatic and flirtatious until - while undercover working with the supplier of the South Florida group - he gets romantically entangled with Isabella, the Chinese-Cuban wife of an arms and drugs trafficker. The best undercover identity is oneself with the volume turned up and restraint unplugged. The intensity of the case pushes Crockett and Tubbs out onto the edge where identity and fabrication become blurred, where cop and player become one - especially for Crockett in his romance with Isabella and for Tubbs in the provocation of an assault on those he loves.

I agree dude, I hated this movie also. Mann does make good films but I feel like he’s a little unstable. ALI was a disappointment to many as well.
i rented it but had to return it before i had a chance to watch it. yeah, i heard it was bad but i guess this confirms it. thanks for the review.
Oh wow. Well, I watched Miami Vice as a kid, and I thought it was cool. However, I’ll have to make sure to stay clear of this one though.
Oh man. I feel slightly responsible. I saw that movie in the theatre and I hated it. But because I haven’t been keeping up my blog as much as I should’ve, I didn’t write a review. Feel I could’ve saved you the pain of watching it. Well… anyway… long story short. I agree!
i was a fan of the original TV series. i read a lot of negative reviews of this movie that i didn’t bother to see it. now after your review, the more i am convinced that i shouldn’t waste my time on this movie. hehe :D
@Nick & Karsten - I’ve seen a couple people give decent reviews for this film, but I need a good story and some character development for me to enjoy a film. This one was really tough.
@Jorgeq- Yeah, put in on the back burner for now. There are many more films worthwhile to see first.
I’ve never been a fan of the show either so when I heard that the movie version was being released, it certainly did not grasp my interest. I had it on my Netflix account but I took it off now. Thanks for the heads up!
I really liked this movie, but I think Michael Mann tried to hard to mimic the bounce-around of the television series.
I bought the DVD on release day ;)
