Apocalypto (Theaters)

apocalypto Apocalypto delivers an adrenaline pumping rush from the opening sequence to the closing credits. I was very impressed with this film, and it really solidified Mel Gibson as one of the best directors of his generation.

The movie was very well paced and I was on the edge of my seat most of the film. The storyline was simple yet satisfying, and the actors played their roles flawlessly. Some who watched this film have mentioned that the film contained excessive violence and gore. I personally felt that the images and violence when put into context of the film was appropriate. The drama, hardship, and pain felt by these people would not have been felt by the audience if many of the violent scenes were edited or deleted.

I would easily vote Apocolypto as the best movie of 2006. I really can’t see another film topping this one. The movie however is very gory and violent so I would highly recommend leaving any children under the age of 14 at home. I would also advise that you skip this film if you have a weak stomach or dislike violence amongst women and children. The movie portrays the realities and hardships of life back in the dark ages. Ruthless and Unrelenting.

As the Maya kingdom faces its decline, the rulers insist the key to prosperity is to build more temples and offer human sacrifices. Jaguar Paw, a young man chosen for sacrifice, flees the kingdom to avoid his fate.

I just finished seeing this one. It’s really good. I’m out of state right now, but as soon as I get the chance, I’ll blog about it.

When I saw this trailer, I thought… what’s wrong with Mel Gibson? I loved “Passion of the Christ”, but sadly, Apocalytpo isn’t for me.

I’ve been intrigued about this movie ever since it came out. I am impressed with Mel as a director (and I liked Passion of The Christ, even though it was quite a bucketful to take in). Thanks for the review!

Strike up another one for political correctness. I stand by my original comment. “Has been increasing in the United States” does not make it correct. The majority of people in the U.S. thought that the new millenium started in 2000, too. That doesn’t make it right. How about “People can’t outrun their destiny.”? Or “You can’t outrun your destiny.”. These work equally well and are gramatically correct.

Regarding Jason’s comment about the incorrect grammar in the tagline: “No one can outrun their destiny.”

It sounds better than, “No one can outrun his or her destiny.” Anyways, I looked up “no one” on dictionary.com and this is what I found.

“The use of plural forms, especially plural pronouns, has been increasing in the United States, partially because of the desire to avoid using he or his to refer to a female.”

So, I don’t see anything wrong with the tagline.

If you’re interested I included the rest of the usage note on the word “each” since “no one” has the same general patterns for pronoun agreement as “each”.

—Usage note The adjective each is always followed by a singular noun: each person; each book. When the adjective follows a plural subject, the verb agrees with the subject: They each dress in different styles. The houses each have central heating. When the pronoun each comes immediately before the verb, it always takes a singular verb: Each comes (not come) from a different country. When the pronoun is followed by an of phrase containing a plural noun or pronoun, there is a tendency for the verb to be plural: Each of the candidates has (or have) spoken on the issue. Some usage guides maintain that only the singular verb is correct, but plural verbs occur frequently even in edited writing. It is also sometimes said that the pronoun each must always be referred to by a singular pronoun, but again actual usage does not regularly observe this stricture: Each member of our garden club had their own special interests. In the most formal speech and writing, singular verbs and pronouns occur more frequently than plural: Each member … had his own special interests. The use of plural forms, especially plural pronouns, has been increasing in the United States, partially because of the desire to avoid using he or his to refer to a female. Anyone, anybody, everyone, everybody, no one, someone, and somebody follow the same general patterns of pronoun agreement as each.

lol. Enjoy the movie. I’m not that meticulous about things like that. If it looks good, I’ll watch it. There is so much slang, accents, etc. in this world, a petty grammatical error does not make much difference for me. Besides the entire film is not even in English!!

I don’t know. I haven’t seen the film yet, but it automatically has a strike against it when the producers can’t even use proper English in the tagline. “No one can outrun their destiny.” No one is singular. Their is plural. That’s something a first grader would be able to pick out as incorrect grammar. Sigh. The decline of intelligence continues.

Blood Diamond is definitely a good movie.

I want to watch Apocalypto and I know it’s gonna be a good movie, Oscar material even. Too bad that there’s so much politics when it comes to giving out awards. I say that there’s no way this wins best movie or best director not because it’s undeserving, but because of Mel’s recent anti-semetic tirade.

Anyway, I need to see this movie.

That’s for the insightful review. The movie definitely caught my eye but I have to admit I had a difficult time seeing The Passion and I hear this one leaves nothing for the imagination. I’ll think about it…lol.

On another note, I hightly recommend that you watch Blood Diamond. This movie is not only entertaining but educational too.

Woah! I didn’t even know the premise. I mean, while watching Deja Vu last weekend I saw the trailer, but wow. This sounds like a good one. Thanks for the review Trench.
