The Final Fu (MTV)

10f The Final Fu is a reality show hosted by Ernie Reyes Jr. on MTV and MTV2 which started airing on July 17th. I’m not a very big fan of reality television, but I do enjoy watching martial arts so I decided to check this out.

The show’s main objective is to pit some of the worlds top martial artists against each other to find out which style of fighting reigns supreme. The biggest problem I see with the show is that the fighting is based on point sparring. Basically just tapping each other with their feet and hands. There is really not much contact at all.

The few matches that I have watched looked very generic. The two opponents would attack each other, but any hits to the head or excessive force would count as deductions. I felt really bad for this one guy who fought because the opponent he was fighting just kept walking into his kicks. Instead of getting points, he was deducted points for excessive contact! What is the guy suppose to do?

According to the judges, you are suppose to be able to control the kicks and punches at all times. So if he is running into your kicks, you should back off a bit. lol. What a crock of shit. I always thought it was the opponent who needed to learn to control his attacks so he wouldnt get hit.

What is also pretty funny about the fights is that there is no defense whatsoever. No one seems to block or defend themselves. They basically just keep kicking and punching until the round is over. My question is, how can we know if a style is supreme without knowing how well defense is taught? hmmm? Personally, I think this show just determines which individual fighter is faster, more agile, and accurate. Thats about it. It will not determine which art is the better one.

The show was a flop even before it starting showing on MTV. Poor Ernie. He should have stayed away from this one. I’ve seen better fights in the elementary playgrounds.

I do not read or get into blogs,or conversations on the internet. I have been a student of an old chinese system for about 9 years. I am not a holder of a black belt because there is so much to learn it takes 10-15 years to obtain by ones progress. Our training is somewhat rough on ourselves because you push yourself or you do not progress. We do not dance in our fighting as I see on the Final Fu. I see little to no defense, control, focus on target points(vital/non vital point areas) just random hitting which my 17 month daughter does a good job of already.

I do not like the lime light. A real martial artist does not broadcast himself as an expert especially I saw very poor balance on the one obstacle course. I am not great on grammer. I do know what I am trying to say. That I am not impressed and half of one episode was enough.

For a martial artist to go on national television and have to be corrected by a peer of your flaws tells something of the artist and not of the system.

You’re right about the lack of defense. Perhaps the matches would have been a better gauge of skill, if they lost a point every time they were hit?

the fights are pretty generic. i’d rather see Ernie fight against them full contact.

I watched the first few episodes and then forgot to record it.
It was good!
Too bad the girls didn’t make it to the end! They were good too!
