Nacho Libre (Theaters)
Nacho Libre is a film good enough for DVD release only. The first twenty minutes of the film is an utter waste of time. Knowing this film is a comedy, you are expecting a big laugh, but they come too far and in between. Actually, I didnt laugh very much at all watching this film. Alot of the good laughs were given away in the previews of this film and although I tried to enjoy it, it was very hard to do so. Skip this movie in the theaters. At best, its a decent rental when there is nothing better to watch on the shelf.
Nacho is a young man who was raised in a monastery in Mexico and now works there as the cook. Fueled by his passion for wrestling, he dons a mask and cape and picks up a partner to compete in a local Lucha Libre tournament to try for the $200 prize so he can buy better food for the kids and achieve respect. When a new nun, Sister Encarnacion, arrives at the monastery, he tries to win her adoration as well while attempting to prove that being a Luchador isn’t a sin and win the grand prize at a battle royal tournament so he can buy a bus for the kids.

I just finished watching it today. It was actually not too bad. I supposed, it’s because it’s got a lot of Mexican jokes that the audience doesn’t catch. I’m not saying that the film was the funniest thing on film right now, but it wasn’t that bad. It was serious, but with comedy, and heroism. It was an uncomment chain of themes.

I actually liked this one. I don’t watch TV much so previews didn’t spoil any of it for me. I’ve watched enough westerns to appreciate what the director did for a few of the scenes. Also, given that this is popcorn flick season, I didn’t find it that bad.
On another note, “The Lake House” is based on the movie I let you and Mel watch — the Korean film “Il Mare”. Should be interesting to see how the two match up.
