Pirates of the Caribbean “At World’s End” (Theaters)

pirates_of_the_caribbean_at_worlds_endUnfortunately, this film will go down as another disappointing ending to a promising series. The Pirates of the Caribbean’s third installment was way too long and exhausting to be enjoyable. With the additions of more sub-plots and characters, the storyline was way to complex to absorb in one sitting.

I really miss the simplicity and humor of the original, “Curse of the Black Pearl“, and I was hoping for something similar for the finale. Instead I got the total opposite. The film was tangled up in a very complex storyline and its funny moments were very sparse considering its length.

Despite a very talented cast, the acting could not save this movie. Johnny Depp did all he could to salvage the film with some witty lines and gritty humor, but it did little to defend the overall integrity of the picture. The one bright spot in the entire film was the quality of the film’s CGI effects, but even that seemed to completely overwhelm the characters and plot.

Even with its huge budget, quality actors, and reputation as a fun family film, this movie fell very flat from being a summer blockbuster. I hope the Transformers can save this summer’s box office because Spiderman 3 and Pirates of the Caribbean “At Worlds End” have certainly come up short.

The Pursuit of Happyness (DVD)

The Pursuit of HappinessThey just don’t make movies this good anymore. Based on a true story, The Pursuit of Happyness depicts the life of Chris Gardner, a man who’s life is pushed to the brink, but continues to fight because of the love for his son. The movie was very heartwarming and even brought a few tears to my eyes. Although I don’t have any children of my own, I can only imagine the pain a man feels when he cannot provide for his wife and children.

I give so much credit to Will Smith and his son Jaden for bringing their roles to life and putting so much emotion into them. This is easily Will’s best performance on the big screen and it really brought out another dimension to his acting. The story was very believable, and it didn’t seem overly dramatic at all. It really felt as if I was witnessing the life of Gardner.

This is definitely an add to the DVD collection. The message is so powerful and simple, yet so many people take it for granted. This film reminds us to appreciate life and all the things we DO have. It also sends a message of hope and demonstrates the power of love for a child. A truly inspirational film.

Deja Vu (DVD)

deja_vu I was very impressed with the way they put this film together. The first twenty or so minutes dragged and I actually began to nod off, but that changed very quickly once Denzel and company began to solve the actual crime. When the film finally picked up, it was relentless action and drama the rest of the way.

Deja Vu was not a flawless film, but it was very entertaining and intriguing. I will admit that it kept me guessing until the final credits. The mix of reality and sci-fi blend so well, that its actually a believable plot. I will definitely give a ton of credit to the great cast of actors who brought this film to life. Everyone from Denzel Washington to Val Kilmer had excellent performances and helped drive the success of the movie.

I would definitely recommend this film to anyone who has not seen it yet. I would not recommend its purchase however. Its one of those films that will excite you only during the initial viewing. Once you finish the movie and unravel all the mystery, its just not a film that you can watch over and over again.

Synopsis:

After an explosion on a ferry kills over 500 people including a large group of party-going sailors, an ATF agent investigates the crime. AN FBI agent also joins the investigation. Impressed with the ATF agent’s skills, the FBI agent invites him to join a new team that has a new program that uses satellite technology to look backwards in time for 4-1/2 days to try to capture the terrorist. Meanwhile a young woman who was burned washes up on shore. Meant to look like part of of the explosion, the body arrives at its location too soon, which leads the agents to believe her death is related to the explosion. As they use the new technology to study the woman, the ATF agent determines that this is not satellite imagery but somehow is using a time warp. From this point in the film, the movie moves from a crime film to a sci-fi time paradox film. Nonetheless, the action is non-stop and always captivating. The end of the film may be confusing to some people, but it is all laid out if one cares to look carefully. Contains some extreme violence that some may find disturbing, particularly during the explosion when many people are shown jumping off the boat in flames.
