American Gangster (Theaters)

american_gangster_ver3When you have a film produced by Ridley Scott combined with two Academy Award winning actors, its only natural to assume that the film’s success would be guaranteed.

American Gangster certainly did not disappoint me. Although it would be unreasonable to compare this film to classics such as The Godfather or Scarface, I thought it was well executed film, and that both Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe put on Oscar winning type performances.

There were some flaws in the film and parts that could have been omitted to make the movie a bit shorter (the custody battle was one example), but overall the pace of the film was good as was its character development. Personally, I thought it lacked some intensity and action, but I’m guessing that more action would mean less realism, which ultimately may have taken away from the film’s accuracy of the life of Frank Lucas.

Synopsis:

Nobody used to notice Frank Lucas, the quiet driver to one of the inner city’s leading black crime bosses. But when his boss suddenly dies, Frank exploits the opening in the power structure to build his own empire and create his own version of the American Dream. Through ingenuity and a strict business ethic, he comes to rule the inner-city drug trade, flooding the streets with a purer product at a better price. Lucas outplays all of the leading crime syndicates and becomes not only one of the city’s mainline corrupters, but part of its circle of legit civic superstars.

Richie Roberts is an outcast cop close enough to the streets to feel a shift of control in the drug underworld. Roberts believes someone is climbing the rungs above the known Mafia families and starts to suspect that a black power player has come from nowhere to dominate the scene. Both Lucas and Roberts share a rigorous ethical code that sets them apart from their own colleagues, making them lone figures on opposite sides of the law. The destinies of these two men will become intertwined as they approach a confrontation where only one of them can come out on top.

Grindhouse – Planet Terror (DVD)

grind_house_ver3This film was pretty sick. Sick as in a totally great flick. Planet Terror was something out of the ordinary and the infection and flesh eating zombie attacks have to be some of the goriest I have ever watched to date.

The vintage look really set the mood for this film and the action in the movie was non-stop from beginning to end. I thought that both Rose McGowan and Freddy Rodriguez were perfect for their roles in the movie, and additions of the Bruce Willis and Quentin Tarantino put the film over the top.

Anyone into gory and disgustingly action packed movies will enjoy Planet Terror, the first half of Grindhouse. If your stomach is weak, this is definitely not a film for you. You will probably shut it down within the first twenty or so minutes. I’ll see if I can catch the 2nd half of Grindhouse’s double feature Death Proof and review it over the course of the week.

Synopsis:

After an experimental bio nerve gas is accidentally released at a remote U.S. military base in Texas, those exposed to the gas turn into flesh-eating, mutating zombies out to kill. An assortment of various people who include stripper Cherry (Rose McGowen), her shady mechanic ex-boyfriend Wray (Freddy Rodriguez), a strong-willed doctor (Marley Shelton), the local sheriff, and an assortment of various people must join forces to survive the night as the so-called “sickos” threaten to take over the whole town and the world.

The Condemned (DVD)

condemnedThe Condemned was not as bad as most people made it out to be and in my opinion was one of WWE’s better box office releases. I do agree that this movie did scream out Battle Royale when I first read its synopsis, but it did not seem as appalling because these men and women were death row criminals rather than unruly fourteen year old friends and classmates.

Although the plot was very thin, the movie’s antagonist played by Vinny Jones made it worth watching to the very end. He played his role so perfectly that I couldn’t wait for him to get a beat down. His sly mannerisms and malicious demeanor just get all under your skin. Steve Austin who was the actual star in the movie did fairly well in his debut film, but it was definitely Jones who stole most of the limelight.

This film is definitely worth a glance if your looking for a good action movie without alot of thinking involved. There are a couple scenes involving female violence that some people frowned upon, so if your sensitive with those types of things, I’d probably pass on this one.

Synopsis:

An adrenalin-charged action thriller, “The Condemned” tells the story of Jack Conrad (Stone Cold Steve Austin), who is awaiting the death penalty in a corrupt Central American prison. He is “purchased” by a wealthy television producer and taken to a desolate island where he must fight to the death against nine other condemned killers from all corners of the world, with freedom going to the sole survivor.
