Observe & Report (DVD)

At the time when Observe & Report came out in theaters, I placed it on the backburner. Having seen nearly all of Seth Rogen’s movies, at the time I felt that this flick was one that I could wait to watch. Months later when it came out on DVD, I finally got my chance. The first thing that popped in my head after the credits rolled was “I should’ve watched this sooner.”

For starters, Observe & Report isn’t your typical laugh a minute comedy. It is probably one of the darker comedies I’ve seen in a while.  While a lot of the humor is pretty obvious, it is the subtle laughs that seem to hit the hardest. This is the type of movie that needs to be watched more than once to catch everything.  In fact, the style of this film is a bit refreshing. It reminds me of ‘Foot Fist Way’ and ‘Cable Guy’ in that the humor isn’t exactly in your face, but if you pay close enough attention to the details, they’re actually very funny flicks.

Ronnie Barnhardt (Rogen) is head of mall security, although the entire mall, including cosmetics girl Brandi (Anna Faris), his object of desire, view him as a walking joke.   In fact, only Ronnie’s inner circle of security guard misfits view him with importance. ( On a side note, the security guard crew is made up of some of the funniest outcasts on screen in a long time).  To make matters worse, Ronnie suffers from mental disorders, which cause his view of reality to be even more deluded. The mall patrons soon fall prey to a perverted flasher and when Brandi is the latest to witness him bare it all, Ronnie sees this as his opportunity to step up. Things become further complicated when a real detective (played by Ray Liotta) is brought in to investigate.  Naturally ronnie and the detective butt heads, and things just get worse from there.

The entire cast of this film was great. Rogen gets to flex more than his comedic abilities as his role requires him to portray a character that is signifiacntly deeper and darker than his usual fare. Anna Faris is also pretty good, although her role only requires her to be the ditzy blonde persona which she has perfected over the years. Ray Liotta is just as good as always, although like Faris, he too has had time to perfect his hard nosed street tough cop persona as well. Perhaps the scene stealer of the entire cast by far goes to Ronnie’s right hand man, Dennis, played by Michael Pena. Pena is insanely funny in this movie. His delivery of even the simplest comments will have you cracking up. The movie also has some of the funniest cameo appearances I’ve ever seen. Keep an eye out for Danny McBride, who has one of the best scenes in the entire film.

The plot of the film is actually very good and quite unexpected. There are a couple of other storylines that interconnect and reach a resolution at the end. At first this movie looks like another take on Paul Blart: Mall Cop. Having seen both, I can say that other than the fact that they are both about mall cops, the similarities end there. While Blart is slapstick stupid humor, Observe is more edgy, with a storyline and characters that are actually driving towards a climatic conclusion.   Observe & Report surprised me in a good way. Right when I was reaching a point where comedies all seemed the same, this movie comes along with enough originality to spice things up.  While definitely not the best or even the funniest movie I’ve seen this year, it just seemed to have the right combination of all the right elements to make it one of the most enjoyable flicks I’ve seen in a while.

Ghosts of Girlfriends Past (DVD)

Chick flicks rarely interest me. More specifically, romantic comedies damn near never interest me. This isn’t because my heart pumps pure testosterone or anything like that, really it’s because they’re just predictable and boring. How many times can the nerdy guy/girl get the hot guy/girl once they’re given a chance? How many times can the superficial character suddenly change their world view and fall for someone completely different from them? So it should be no surprise that I was pretty much kicking and screaming when I was forced at gunpoint to watch ‘Ghosts of Girlfriends Past’  recently.  What is surprising though, is that I actually enjoyed this flick a lot, despite the deck being stacked against it.

The premise is similar to that of Charles Dickens’ classic ‘ A Christmas Carol’.  Here, the Scrooge role is played by Matthew Mc Connaughey. Connor Mead (Mc Connaughey) is a renowned fashion photographer who is just as famous for his exploits with the ladies as he is for his pictures. When invited to his younger brother Paulie’s wedding, he immediately goes about mocking and degrading everything in sight, even going as far as to denounce love and its existence to everyone at the rehearsal dinner.  Connor is then visited by his late Uncle Wayne, played incredibly by Michael Douglas, who also happens to be the one who taught Connor everything he knows about the ladies back when he was still living.   Uncle Wayne tells Connor that he will be visited by 3 ghosts: Girlfriends Past, Girlfriends Present, and Girlfriends Future by the end of the night.

On the surface, the premise seems a bit silly and cartoonish, however what makes the movie work so well is the cast. Mc Connaughey has got the successful player role down to a tee. I don’t know what it is about him, but he is just so believable in this movie. Jennifer Garner is terrific as his love that got away. She goes from being sarcastic one moment to breaking down in tears the next. Regardless of what emotion she is conveying, it comes across as genuine. Michael Douglas is perhaps the funniest character in the whole film. His role as the old player passing down his game is excellent.  This is perhaps the funniest Michael Douglas role I’ve seen since ‘Romancing the Stone.’ The movie made me want to go out and get a license plate like his. (if you watch the movie you’ll know exactly what I mean). The supporting cast is spot on also. The younger brother, the fiancee, and the father in law all have great comedic presence in this flick.

I’m glad I took the time to watch this movie. While at first I was reluctant, by the end of the film I had a new appreciation for this movie. They took two tired and overplayed ideas (the romantic comedy and the christmas carol set up) and managed to blend them into something unique and entertaining.  I highly recommend this movie, especially for guys who need to fill their chick flick quota but also want to keep their suffering to a minimum.

Crank: High Voltage (DVD)

Sometimes the action movie genre gets so oversaturated with the same old same old. Once in a while a movie comes around that offers something fresh and new to the game. That movie is Crank:High Voltage. Form the very beginning, C:HV gives the finger to convention, decency, and even reality all at once and takes you for a non-stop thrill ride for the duration of the film.

This isn’t a perfect movie, or anywhere close to being perfect for that matter. What makes it work so well is that the movie requires you to completely suspend all disbelief and just get lost in the flurry of the events on screen.  The movie is raunchy, brutal, and intense at the same time. I think its safe to say that C:HV holds nothing back as it proceeds to ridicule and destroy nearly everything it addresses.

The premise is simple, if not completely insane. Hitman Chev Chelios (Jason Statham) has his heart unwillingly removed and replaced with a rechargeable pacemaker. The entire movie follows his quest to find his heart and have it replaced into his chest. Along the way he will have to fight through the Mexican Mafia and the Chinese Triad gangs in addition to the local police force. Those familiar with Statham’s style will be right at home with this film, as he uses everything in the environment as a weapon and spares no one.

This movie holds nothing back. I’ve seen every SAW movie to date without so much as wincing, but there are one or two scenes here that made me cringe a bit. The action, although a bit cartoonish at times,  is excellently done and frantically paced. While this movie won’t win any awards any time soon, it is an excellent example of mind numbingly entertaining action.  Once in a while its good to just let your grip on reality loose and go wherever the movie takes you. Luckily Crank: High Voltage has enough freshness to make this ride worth your while. If you’re looking to unleash some insanity, definitely check this movie out.
