Tin Man (Sci Fi Original Mini Series)

tinman_largeOver the past three evenings, I have spent my time on the tube watching Sci-Fi’s highly anticipated mini series, Tin Man. Based on the classic novel The Wizard of Oz by Frank Baum, Tin Man takes you on a journey through the Outer Zone (The O.Z.), in search of an emerald which will change the landscape of the kingdom forever.

I thought the adaptation of the film was well done. It didn’t take on the same story as The Wizard of Oz, but you could clearly see the connection between the two. At the end of each night, the story left me wanting to know more, and the little twist in the series involving Dorothy Gale (D.G.) and her family secret was a really good move on the directors part.

The series was not perfect however. I thought there were several parts that dragged quite a bit, and ending was definitely a disappointment. With the series clocking in a total of six hours of viewing time (including commercials), I personally felt the ending did not climax very well, and just didn’t leave you with any sense of elation or enchantment.

Tinman is definitely a great family series for all. A brave adaptation of the Wizard of Oz which comes up just a bit short at the end. I’m not sure that I would spend six hours watching it for a second time on Sci-Fi, but with the series inevitably coming out on DVD in the future, I would consider watching it from beginning to end without all the extras in between.

American Gangster (Theaters)

american_gangster_ver3When you have a film produced by Ridley Scott combined with two Academy Award winning actors, its only natural to assume that the film’s success would be guaranteed.

American Gangster certainly did not disappoint me. Although it would be unreasonable to compare this film to classics such as The Godfather or Scarface, I thought it was well executed film, and that both Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe put on Oscar winning type performances.

There were some flaws in the film and parts that could have been omitted to make the movie a bit shorter (the custody battle was one example), but overall the pace of the film was good as was its character development. Personally, I thought it lacked some intensity and action, but I’m guessing that more action would mean less realism, which ultimately may have taken away from the film’s accuracy of the life of Frank Lucas.

Synopsis:

Nobody used to notice Frank Lucas, the quiet driver to one of the inner city’s leading black crime bosses. But when his boss suddenly dies, Frank exploits the opening in the power structure to build his own empire and create his own version of the American Dream. Through ingenuity and a strict business ethic, he comes to rule the inner-city drug trade, flooding the streets with a purer product at a better price. Lucas outplays all of the leading crime syndicates and becomes not only one of the city’s mainline corrupters, but part of its circle of legit civic superstars.

Richie Roberts is an outcast cop close enough to the streets to feel a shift of control in the drug underworld. Roberts believes someone is climbing the rungs above the known Mafia families and starts to suspect that a black power player has come from nowhere to dominate the scene. Both Lucas and Roberts share a rigorous ethical code that sets them apart from their own colleagues, making them lone figures on opposite sides of the law. The destinies of these two men will become intertwined as they approach a confrontation where only one of them can come out on top.

Grindhouse – Planet Terror (DVD)

grind_house_ver3This film was pretty sick. Sick as in a totally great flick. Planet Terror was something out of the ordinary and the infection and flesh eating zombie attacks have to be some of the goriest I have ever watched to date.

The vintage look really set the mood for this film and the action in the movie was non-stop from beginning to end. I thought that both Rose McGowan and Freddy Rodriguez were perfect for their roles in the movie, and additions of the Bruce Willis and Quentin Tarantino put the film over the top.

Anyone into gory and disgustingly action packed movies will enjoy Planet Terror, the first half of Grindhouse. If your stomach is weak, this is definitely not a film for you. You will probably shut it down within the first twenty or so minutes. I’ll see if I can catch the 2nd half of Grindhouse’s double feature Death Proof and review it over the course of the week.

Synopsis:

After an experimental bio nerve gas is accidentally released at a remote U.S. military base in Texas, those exposed to the gas turn into flesh-eating, mutating zombies out to kill. An assortment of various people who include stripper Cherry (Rose McGowen), her shady mechanic ex-boyfriend Wray (Freddy Rodriguez), a strong-willed doctor (Marley Shelton), the local sheriff, and an assortment of various people must join forces to survive the night as the so-called “sickos” threaten to take over the whole town and the world.
