Eastbound & Down (HBO)

East Bound & Down is one of those shows that just doesn’t give a shit about anything as long as it gets a laugh. This happens to be right up my alley. I first read about the show before it started airingon HBO. It is created by Jody Hill (Foot Fist Way, Observe & Report), Will Ferrell, and Danny McBride. Anyone familiar with their brand of comedy will instantly be a fan of East Bound and Down.

Mc Bride plays the lead role as Kenny Powers, a washed up major leauge pitcher who finds himself strapped for cash and has to move back to his hometown and work at the local middle school as a substitute P.E. teacher. In his mind, Powers still believes he is a genuine superstar and he treats everyone else as if they are beneath him. The show is flat out hilarious. It may be very offensive to some people, but those who can appreciate it at face value will be able to enjoy some serious laughs.

This is by far one of the funniest shows I have seen in a long time. If there is an “asshole” reaction to a situation, you can bet that Kenny Powers chooses that option. For those who enjoy a good laugh, I recommend checking this show out.

America’s Best Dance Crew – Season 5 Predictions

The final three crews are left and it is time for me to make my season predictions. I have never picked the winner correctly, but my choices have always been in the top three. In season order, I have chosen Kaba Modern, So Real Crew, and the Beat Freaks to take the championship, but in each season they came up a bit short. Last season, the crews were so disappointing that I actually missed most of the episodes, so I have no favorite for season four. This year however, the crews have definitely stepped it up, and I think that two of the top three crews definitely belong there.

Out of the three crews left, Im rooting for Blu Print Crew and Poreotix to make the finals. Blu Print Crew is easily the better “dance” crew overall, and if the west coast is going to fall, I think BPC is definitely the crew to dethone them. They have a great set of dancers, and are the most well rounded crew left in the top three. Poreotix on the other hand, is easily the most entertaining of the bunch. I think entertainment plays a huge factor in being a great dancer. No matter how good you are, if you can’t entertain the audience, then your skill set is worthless. Since the regionals, I felt that Poreotix would be a crew to be reckoned with and I was correct. Their ability to entertain the crowd make them a fan favorite, and it has helped them garner the votes of the viewers. They have never made the bottom two and rightfully so. The fans have spoken each and everytime despite some of the criticism from the judges.

As for Hype 5-0, I have to agree with everything Omarion has said about them. I’m a huge supporter of our island brothers and sisters, but they have not done much to improve themselves. They bring good energy, but nothing makes them stand out. I thought Jungle Boogie should have made the top three rather than Hype.

Now for my prediction. I think entertainment will trump skill set. If the judges were to vote, then BPC would win this show hands down. However, with the Canadian community being unable to vote and Poreotix being such a huge crowd pleaser, I have to go with the robotic humor and showmanship. POREOTIX FTW!

Who will make ABDC Season 5 Finals?

  • Poreotix (69%, 11 Votes)
  • Blu Print Crew (19%, 3 Votes)
  • Hype 5-0 (12%, 2 Votes)

Total Voters: 16

Dexter – Showtime Series

We can all agree cable TV has dished out some of the greatest shows ever. Whether it’s past comedies like FRIENDS and Seinfeld to present suspense/drama shows like Lost and Heroes respectively, the list of television shows continue to grow. But if you want to see really good shows, they all lie in the hands of premium channels like HBO and Showtime. That brings us to Dexter, a crime/drama too controversial for cable TV, and one I just happened to stumble upon while shopping for DVDs.

Dexter Morgan is not your average person. By day, he is a blood spatter analyst for the Miami Metro Police Department. By night, he is a serial killer that preys on criminals that escape the justice system  or are never suspected in the first place. While killing someone is wrong in it’s own right, Dexter follows the ‘Code of Harry’ by which he chooses his victims. The ‘Code’ is a set of rules and standards his foster father Harry Morgan, an accomplished Detective for the same PD Dexter works for, taught him when he discovered Dexter has sociopathic tendencies upon adopting him as a child. Instead of waiting around for the inevitable to happen, Harry Morgan realized he can use Dexter’s murderous intent to bring justice to criminals that constantly escape the law. In addition to having a ‘code’, Harry also teaches Dexter to blend in with the real world due to his inability to experience “emotion”. The series centers on Dexter of course, as he continues to channel his lust for killing all the while juggling time between his job, social life and romantic life with his girlfriend Rita, whom he’s using to appear ‘normal’. The first season focuses on Dexter’s encounters with a fellow serial killer dubbed as the Ice Truck Killer, who leaves clues for Dexter at his crime scenes about his past. Dexter uses these clues to discover a secret that will change his life forever.

Dexter in many ways is more than controversial. The ability to sell the idea that a serial killer is the ‘good guy’ is near impossible, but Emmy Award Winning screenwriter James Manos Jr pulls it off brilliantly. While many will find the idea of sympathizing with a serial killer outrageous, Michael C. Hall convinces us with a top-notch performance. Although he is as cold-blooded as his victims, Hall shows Dexter is more than a monster by his constant questioning of human emotion. Hall gives you the sense that Dexter desperately wants to be ‘normal’ at times, but accepts his true nature. Add the excellent supporting cast of Jennifer Carpenter and Julie Benz to name a few, and you have one of the best crime/dramas in recent memory. If you enjoy engaging drama with a fair balance of suspense and dark comedy, Dexter is the perfect slice of entertainment.
