Top 5 Blu Ray Picks of 2008

3255aAfter finally taking the plunge and buying a Playstation 3 over the summer, I was excited to experience the Blu Ray format I had been hearing so much about. In fact, since purchasing the console, I have made it a point to try and watch at least one new Blu Ray disc a week. While there are a ton of Blu Ray discs that are well worth purchasing, I’ve managed to narrow it down to the 5 Blu Ray films from 2008 that I feel give the most bang for your buck, literally. Keep in mind that I am not evaluating these movies in terms of special features included and things like that, strictly on picture and sound quality and overall cinematic experience. Here they are in no particular order:

1) Iron Man.

This is probably pretty obvious to anyone who has seen this film. There are tons of explosions and bullets flying everywhere. Oh, and not to mention Iron Man, who looks amazing on Blu Ray. Everything from small scratches and nicks in his armor come alive on the screen. You almost feel like he’s about to fly into your living room.  The effects are so well done it is easy to forget that many of them are CGI.

Recently added “Fringe” to my Must See TV Listing

I wrote a post late last month regarding my selections for Must See Television Shows of 2008. Although I have no plans to drop those shows from my regular scheduled programming, I have added one more to the list of must see’s.

4. Fringe

From J.J. Abrams, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, the team behind “Star Trek,” “Mission: Impossible III” and “Alias,” comes a new series that will thrill, terrify and explore the blurring line between the possible and the impossible. Fox Info

I normally try to wait until the end of the first season to watch the entire series on DVD, but with all this talk about how great the series was I took a chance. As a die hard sci-fi geek I easily was drawn into it. Now I’m hooked on the series and hopefully its lasts unlike the promising Blade series which was cut just after a single season run.

When it Airs: On Guam is airs at 9pm every Wednesday on Fox6. I believe it airs in the mainland on Tuesday’s at 9/8c.

Why I watch it: First of all its J.J. Abrams we are talking about here! Just take a look at his track record. He’s like the Steven Spielberg of television. I tried to stay away and it became futile. I got totally sucked into it!

My favorite characters: Its easily Walter Bishop. I’m sure most would agree with me as well. Bishop is the Frankenstein of modern science and he brings a bit of comedic value to a show that would otherwise be all serious.

Deception (DVD)

Deception was a film that caught me off guard. I couldn’t quite make up my mind if I loved it or hated it. I enjoy good suspense driven thrillers and found the storyline to be quite interesting and thought the casting and acting was superb. However, I was very disappointed with the execution of the film and its overall predictability.

Hughes Jackman plays Wyatt Bose, a successful lawyer/playboy who at first glance seems to have life all figured out. Jackman played his role quite well and was cold and villainous when he had to be, yet quite charming and likable otherwise. I think he did exceptionally well in this typecast and it would be quite interesting to see him in more of the same.

Ewan McGregor also put on a notable performance as roaming accountant Jonathan McQuarry. The transformation from geek to bad boy was done very smoothly and I thought he transitioned to his new character very well. It was just nice to see that he was not stuck in the “May the Force be with You” persona and could take on other roles fairly easily. Finally, there is Dawson’s Creek star Michelle Williams. The vulnerability of her character made her extremely hot in this movie, and to be completely honest with you, that’s all she needed for her role. She was perfect.
