Land of the Lost (Theaters)

While I didn’t go into the theater wanting to watch this movie, by the time it was over I was pretty satisfied. I didn’t expect much, if anything at all, going in to watch this movie but I found myself pretty surprised at not only how funny it was, but also how mature the humor in this film is.  This flick is not for everyone and your enjoyment of this movie depends largely on one critical factor- do you like Will Ferrell?  If you don’t, Land of the Lost will be an extremely painful experience for you.

Will Ferrell’s humor pretty much dominates the entire movie from beginning to end. This is not exactly a good or bad thing, but there are definite moments in the film where his humor struggles to keep things together.  There are also some straight up hilarious moments in this movie that really had me busting up.  While this movie is marketed as a kid friendly flick, there were enough awkward sexual and drug references in the film that you may have to explain to any young viewers you watch this movie with. Other than a few goofy scenes, the majority of the humor in this flick is aimed at adults, which is a pretty good thing.

Ferrell is given excellent support int he form of reluctant sidekicks Danny Mc Bride and Jorma Taccone. Mc Bride is instantly recognizable in his trademark beard and mullet. McBride plays well off of Ferrell, and similar to Ferrell, if you enjoy McBride’s humor you will like this film. Taccone is unrecognizable as the primate “Cha-ka”, but manages to provide some of the most solid laughs of the entire flick. The film almost comes off as a crazy road trip type movie by the time everything is said and done.

Land of the Lost is definitely not the best movie of the summer, probably not even the best movie of the week. It is however, pretty damn entertaining. If you like Ferrell’s movies, this one will not disappoint. Ferrell and McBride’s chemistry is pretty spot on. If you’ve seen all the other major flicks out right now and are looking for some time to kill in a theater, check out this movie.

I thought if someone remake this movie it will be serious and can be watched by all ages, but in fact this movie only appropriate for adult people, can’t take my niece to watch it :(

As one who remembers the cheesy Sid & Marty Krofft original… I can’t bear to part with $9 to see that horrible series resurrected into an even more horrible feature film.

But, maybe I’ll tivo it once it hits cable…
