Star Trek was an outstanding film. J.J. Abrams has absolutely outdone himself with this wonderfully cast and brilliantly directed film, mixing the old with the new, and pushing its limits without ever straying too far from original Trek universe. With one single stroke, J.J. has revitalized what was once a fading franchise.
Without giving too much away, I wanted to mention the well written screenplay. In all honesty, I had no idea what the story entailed, and was rather surprised with the direction Abrams took. Rather than it being a remake of original Star Trek, the film was actually a complete reboot of the franchise. At its core, the story centers around a youthful and rather eccentric James Tiberius Kirk, the relationships he developed with his future crew members, and his ultimate rise to captain of the USS Enterprise.
The casting for this film was top notch. Each character played off the other very well, and I was completely taken back at how closely they resembled their original counterparts. Chris Pine plays the ideal Kirk, and his mannerisms, intelligence, and brash decision making in the film nails the role of the Captain Kirk we all know so well. Zachary Quinto put on a brilliant performance as Spock, a man torn between his mixed heritage of Vulcan and Human. The balance of logic and emotion was done almost flawlessly, and we are able to witness the internal battle within himself to honor both sides of his ancestry.
Overall, I was very pleased with this film. Star Trek will definitely appeal to a very broad audience and besides being such a technical marvel, it combines a great storyline with an incredible cast which definitely makes it a worthwhile experience. If your a fan of Sci Fi features, I suggest you don’t wait for this on DVD. Get the full experience and see it on the silverscreen. Its definitely worth your time. “Live Long, and Prosper”.
It seriously surprises me this more is supposed to be that good.
It’s supposed to be released in VN in two weeks, but I just found out about a special (and expensive) sneak preview for tomorrow, so I’m excited!

What Star Trek film were you watching? Star Trek (2009) is not outstanding, by any stretch of the imagination. I was more entertained watching Event Horizon and Sunshine. Generations had better writing than this film, not to mention First Contact.
By the time it got to the two Spocks talking to each other, I was like: “Just end.” At least the first twenty minutes were good, also Chekov’s portrayal and McCoy’s intro were good as well.
I will probably never sit through this entire film again.

If we all agreed, whats the point in making reviews right? I dont know what you watched, but I’ll stick to my thoughts on it. I really enjoyed it and Abrams definitely put Star Trek back in the running as one of the greatest SCI FI franchises out there. (after my STAR WARS of course!)
I’d like to know what Film Book likes- I wonder why he gave the comparisons to Sunshine and Event Horizon, two sci-fi horror films.

Just saw it, I liked it. The only Trek movie I sorta remember was Wrath of Khan, that was it. Film Book, how can you say Chekov’s portrayal was good? That was the worst accent I’ve ever heard. Everytime he was onscreen I got irritated. While this reboot won’t make me an instant “fan”, I’ll definitely see the inevitable sequel.
The Wrath of Khan was the only film I remember as well…
The Wrath Of Khan was good. I haven’t seen this but I hope it’s not (doesn’t sound like it) like the god awful Star Trek:The Voyage Home, gee that was bad.

Shit, screw the guy up there talking about nonsense. I am a dire-hard fan, including my mom, who raised me on Trek. Star Trek came out during her late teens and early twenties. Hell, she loved it! When we got back home, we got slick and watched it online. She just loved it and so did I. F-that dude.

yeah, I didn’t really agree with him either. If 95% of the population of movie goers enjoyed the film on Rotten Tomatoes and IMDB, Star Trek must have done something right. :) Glad you enjoyed it Ayprel.

Because they are sci-fi films Michael. That is the main genre Star Trek belongs to. The list of what I like is vast. Please specify.
@choco*fish Because it was entertaining and his character was intelligent.
@Ayprel That was not very nice.
Trench, my Star Trek (2009) Review is up so give it a read when you get a chance. Set some time aside though. :)

@Film Book – got to read your review, I’m not a die hard Trekkie so maybe that’s why you don’t like the film as much because of the comparison and “logic”. While I agree Nero was a horrible villain, didn’t he mention early on in the movie that he rebelled against the Romulans and what he’s doing isn’t exactly something they would agree with. And did Nero really know he had to wait 25 years for Spock to come through? Just a query :)
