X-men Origins : Wolverine (Theaters)

There seems to be this ever growing Hollywood trend of releasing prequels after a series comes to a close. In almost all cases (besides Star Wars), the prequels have been actually better than their predecessors. I found this to be the case with Marvel’s latest release, X-men Origins : Wolverine.

Marvel had greatly disappointed me with X3 : The Last Stand, so I had actually expected this film to flop at the box office. However, after the final credits rolled, I must admit that I was actually wrong. Fans of of the X-Men franchise should appreciate this film, and although the storyline wasn’t anything to brag about, it should be good enough to hold its own with most of its fanbase. The script had a good balance of action and drama, and rather than being a mindless action film full of high budget special effects which I had originally expected, there was actually some decent dialogue tied into it.

The real meat of the origins story is definitely the love/hate relationship between mutant brothers Wolverine and Sabertooth. Liev Schreiber is very convincing as Saber, and after watching this film, I was completely satisfied with his casting. Most movie goers are already familiar with the Hugh Jackman casting. He really needs no introduction, and from a fans perspective, he definitely was born for his role as Wolverine.

My biggest disappointment with the origins film has to be the under utilization of Gambit. He is such an incredible character, yet he completely lacked screen time. With just a little more than five minutes on the bigscreen, I couldn’t help but be a bit disgruntled.

Overall, I think X-Men Orgins : Wolverine is the perfect film to kick off an exciting summer of blockbuster films. If your a fan of the X-Men franchise and appreciate more than just an adrenaline rush of action, this is a must see in theaters.

I agree. The first half of the movie is definitely the best. If the first half wasn’t so good, the horrible ending would’ve killed the movie for me.

i need my gambit! hollywood keeps giving him the shaft and it is completely unacceptable!

Believe me Prach, I was screaming for more Gambit. His character was amazing and I definitely wished he was more involved in this film.

Hi Trench, you have a lot of movie review here and it scares me to the point that I might end up loving your review or refused going to the theatre, hahaha.

This movie is now ON. Unfortunately I had to pick “Monsters VS Aliens” over Wolverine because I’m saving it for last.

Wolverine doesn’t interest me that much but I really want to go and see the new Star Trek movie.

See, that is what I was looking forward to seeing… Gambit. Oh well.

  • K says:

Yup, I enjoyed it with their new 3D glasses – it didn’t give me a headache unlike their previous one. And because 3D movie is relatively expensive, we were allowed to bring take it home.

  • Michael says:

I liked Wolverine as well. Agreed on poor use of Gambit, but also like Sabretooth a lot

  • The first half is better than the second half? This is why I want to read Weapon X and Origins first before seeing this film.

  • trench says:

I dont know if the first half is better than the second half, but the ending was a bit disappointing for me.

  • CRS says:

Maybe its not that lopsided, but the first 3/4 of the movie was pretty good. The ending really brought it down a lot. Not to mention all the characters they butchered. I may need to review this one too.

  • K says:

I just watched it. Excellent movie, overall I enjoyed it. The ending was somewhat giving me the “sequel” is on the making, don’t you think?

  • CRS says:

I dont think there will be a Wolverine sequel anytime soon. From what I’ve been reading, Marvel is trying to start a X-men Origins series and the next movie in line is X-men Origins: Magneto. Should be pretty sick, especially if they show Magneto’s darker side. I thought he was pretty tame in the X-men flicks so far..

Finally saw it…while it is “better” than X3, I found X3 to be more enjoyable. Some of the CGI was just downright horrible. And how can you have TWO proverbial Hollywood screams?! Just not right, but not a total disaster. In fact, I bet this’ll be better than G.I. Joe. Let’s hope for the best…TRANSFORMERS FTW!

  • CRS says:

I just read that the next X movie will be Deadpool starring Ryan Reynolds. I have my fingers crossed on this one. We all know what happened at the end of Wolverine. Before the ending though i thought Reynolds was a solid Deadpool though. Guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
