One of the most serene landscapes I have ever visited was The Butchart Gardens in Victoria Canada British Columbia. A massive 55 acre estate filled with all types of flora, The Butchart Gardens is absolutely one of the most amazing places to visit at almost anytime of the year.

My wife and I were fortunate enough to visit during the garden’s peak season when its flowers were already in full bloom. We arrived at the park in the early afternoon and stayed until evening to experience the gardens renown Night Illumination display. As you stroll through the park, it is such a tranquil experience that you honestly forget that you are walking through a man made attraction. The park’s beauty is matched only by the delightful fragrances that bombard your senses as you travel through all its meandering paths. I personally enjoyed the Japanese and Sunken Gardens the best, but there are quite a few other sections of the park which are just as serene.

I had heard from others that the gardens were even more amazing during the seasons of Autumn and Winter when its leaves begin to change shades and they put up decor to celebrate the Magic of Christmas. I would really love to experience this if the opportunity ever presented itself.

Location:
The Butchart Gardens is located on Vancouver Island, 23 km (14 miles) north of Victoria, and 20 km (12.5 miles) south of the Vancouver-Victoria ferry terminal at Swartz Bay. Our street address is 800 Benvenuto Avenue in Brentwood Bay.

Admission:
They are open every day of the year at 9 a.m. except for Christmas day when they open at 1 p.m. See : Admission Rates

We visited the Butchart Gardens in 2007. The gardens were absolutely gorgeous. We booked a package from Clipper Vacation from Seattle to Victoria, BC. Victoria was a very cute little town. If you rent a car, you can tour the island as well. That’s what we did. I am sure we’ll go back again soon.

@ Carl, We rode the COHO situated about two hours from Seattle. Forgot the name of it. It took us just an hour to arrive to Victoria. Victoria is amazing!

Wow. Sounds like a great experience. And it’s just under 5 hours north of where I live! One day, maybe when my littlest one is a bit bigger and can handle the trip, I’ll check it out. Thanks for the review.

If you go by bus and plan to stay rather late, be sure to check the schedule for the last bus that leaves the gardens!

We didn’t and ended up taking a $50 cab drive back to the ferry to return to Vancouver.

But the gardens were spectacular when we visited in May, 2006. Well worth the trip.

Yup. EI is still around. As long as we have at least a few regular members, it will stay running. Although the design is still the same (something we’ll change eventually), we did add a bunch of new features and sections to the site.

    hello all,
Yes, Victoria is a quaint little city and has many new buildings and restaurants going up. You can even take a tour in a horse drawn cart, visit Butchart Gardens, tour up island or just enjoy a great beach.

Summer weather is at last taking hold in much of Canada, so come on in and enjoy it now.

  • Interesting post, having a bit of an issue accessing the RSS feed. I would quite like to subscribe to your blog. Will try again later. Thanks again, Dana Schwarzkopf
