Entertainment Wrap #6

street_fighter_the_legend_of_chun_li_xlgIf you take a second and listen you can hear the knees of young girls buckle all over the world as the Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience opens up this week.  The movie title pretty much sums up what the movie is about. The brothers sing, girls scream, rinse and repeat.  For those seeking a more engaging cinema experience this week, Street Fighter; The Legend of Chun Li opens this week also.  The movie follows the storyline of the title character in the SF universe. Perhaps the most interesting part of this film is the casting, which I don’t think anyone could have forseen these actors in the roles they are playing. Kristin Kreuk, of Smallville fame, stars as Chun Li. While I never pictured Chun Li being portrayed by Kreuk, they could have given her a role as a door in this movie and guys will still go check it out.  Sadly, I am also a part of this group.

Crossing Over is another movie opening up this week and it features a strong ensemble cast.  The movie stars Harrison Ford, Ray Liotta, and Ashley Judd to name a few. The plot centers around immigrants from various countries all coming to Los Angeles and it follows their lives as they struggle to gain their legal immigration status.  Judging from the cast and the multi storyline premise, this movie looks promising.

VIDEO

sex_driveNew videos this week include “What Just Happened” and “Sex Drive”. I have a review posted for Sex Drive already so for more info on that one, check it out. What Just Happened stars Robert DeNiro as an ailing movie producer struggling to cope with stereotypical Hollywood problems in the form of nagging ex wives, primadonna actors, and over budget films. The vibe of the movie seems similar to Robert Altman’s “The Player” which had a similar premise and main character.   The movie has received mix reviews, however it may be worth checking out if you are interested in a portrayal of some of Hollywood inner workings.  Other than that, its a relatively slow week in the world of videos.

GAMING

dead-rising02As far as new games this week, there are two that are worth mentioning.  They are “Dead Rising: Chop till You Drop” for the Wii and the hotly anticipated “Killzone 2″ for the PS3.  Dead Rising:CTYD  is the Wii port of the excellent Xbox360 launch title Dead Rising. The original game showcased the power of the 360 by impressively featuring a large number of zombies all on the screen interacting at the same time. It was basically a sandbox style game that takes place in a shopping mall infested with zombies. The Wii version dramatically scales down the number of zombies present at a given time, and elements like photography and high quality graphics that were present in the original have missed the transition to the Wii.  For those who missed out on the 360 original experience, this should be worth checking out. However those familiar with the original may want to pass on this scaled down version unless they are really cracked out for a new Dead Rising fix.

Finally, after countless rumors and delays, Sony has released what they hope to be one of the system’s flagship titles in Killzone 2.  Graphically, KZ2 is jaw dropping, with visuals so detailed they pull you into the screen.  Unfortunately, “floaty” control issues that plagued the demo are still present here in the final retail build. While they are not necessarily a game breaker, they do require a lot of getting used to, especially after the tight and responsive control standards set by FPS juggernauts like Halo 3 and Call of Duty.  It is a shame really, as the game so far seems absolutely incredible, but I can understand why some people may become frustrated with the controls to the point they may pass this game up.  I’m still playing through this one, but expect a full review once I’ve flipped the campaign and spent some time in the multiplayer.

That’s pretty much it for a relatively slow entertainment week.  Until next week- that ‘s a wrap!

  1. The movie posters look pretty bad as well. I tried looking for a better one than what I posted above. No such luck. haha. But how bad can it be? At least there is no return of Van Damme! LOL

  2. @trench. Sorry, I wanted to review this one for you but this movie has achieved almost all levels of BAD. Honestly, it made the JCVD version look good. In fact, I just might go look for the first film and watch it to make myself feel better.
