I have never been a huge fan of comedy films, but I must admit that I genuinely enjoyed Get Smart. The casting was perfect for this film, and although it had a weak storyline and predictable plot, the stars of the film made up for it with some solid performances.
Hardly a fan of the original series, I have seen several clips of the 1960′s classic sitcom starring Don Adams. Based on those clips alone, I thought that Steve Carrell was the best actor available for the role of Maxwell Smart. Carrell’s performance was the catalyst to the film’s success and without him, I think Get Smart would have completely bombed at the box office.
Overall, this film was quite entertaining. If you need a good flick to pass the time and are looking for some good stomach churning laughs, this movie will definitely make you day. Pick it up as a rental.
Synopsis:
40-Year-Old Virgin star Steve Carell steps into the telephonic shoes of television’s most beloved bumbling detective in this big-screen adaptation of the hit 1960s-era comedy series created by Mel Brooks. The evil geniuses at KAOS have hatched a diabolical plot to dominate every living man, woman, and child on the planet, and their plot gets under way as they attack the headquarters of the U.S. spy agency Control. As a result of the attack, the identity of every agent working for Control has been compromised. Realizing that the only way to thwart KAOS’ evil plan is to promote eager but inexperienced Control analyst Maxwell Smart (Carell) to the rank of special agent, the Chief (Alan Arkin) reluctantly teams Smart with Agent 99 (Anne Hathaway) — a veteran super-spy whose beauty is only surpassed by her lethality. With no real field experience to speak of and nothing but sheer enthusiasm and a handful of fancy spy gadgets to help him accomplish his deadly mission, Maxwell Smart his new partner, Agent 99, will be forced to faces malevolent KAOS head Siegfried (Terence Stamp) and his loyal army of minions in a decisive fight that will determine the fate of the free world. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, David Koechner, Terry Crews, and Ken Davitian co-star. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide
I agree completely, Get Smart was a lot of fun,
My favorite actor in the whole film has to be Bill Murray. He had a stupid role, but it’s good to see him still making films.
@Polaris671 – In the tree? LMAO.
And don’t forget the Bruce and Lloyd DVD that also came out!

Heh I love comedy films. I wasn’t sure I wanted to see yet another Anne Hatheway movie so I didn’t go see this but it’ll be good for a DVD night (or a TMN on demand night) one day. Thanks Trench!

@fragileheart – no problem. Hatheway worked well in this film alongside Steve Carrell. Im sure you’ll get a few good laughs.
When this movie was first advertised I thought ‘ what a terrible movie this will be’. I remember Get Smart reruns as a kid and loved it, then they made a few get smart movies with the original cast – so so bad.
Steve Carrell, I had never heard of before the US version of The Office (and I thought the first season of that was terrible compared to the brilliant original UK one but after that it was great)
This movie is actually pretty good and I have to agree that Carrell probably made the movie, I think if it was anyone else it would have bombed.

@Paul – It definitely would have bombed. I have no doubt in my mind that Carrell was the reason for its success.
