Who will replace Gil Grissom in CSI?

Television’s most watched crime show is getting a makeover. When I first heard the news that William Petersen would be leaving Crime Scene Investigation I was in total shock. Being a huge fan of the crime series particularly the Vegas edition, I just couldn’t imagine Petersen being replaced. Gil Grissom is without a doubt my favorite character on the show and it will definitely be odd without him there to lead Vegas’s elite forensic team.
Since Peterson’s announcement, I’ve heard multiple rumors regarding three possible candidates for his replacement including Laurence Fishburne, John Malkovich, and Kurt Russell. Although I’m not a huge fan of any of these actors, I do agree that Fishburne is probably the best fit for Petersen’s replacement. This was the description of Fishburne’s new character as reported on Yahoo.
Fishburne is being heavily courted to play the new character, described as a doctor/scientist outsider to the CSI unit who has the same genetic profile as a serial killer but hasn’t previously acted on any homicidal impulses.
So who do you think would be the best replacement? Should it be Fishburne, or does Malkovich and Russell sound like enticing to you. I still can’t believe Grissom will no longer be on the show!!

I also like CSI Vegas, and Grissom is my favorite character. Can’t imagine what it would be if they change the artist. I think it would be weird.
@Dunn – I guess we can stay tuned and see for ourselves in the upcoming months.
Horatio Caine should be in charge for EVERY version of CSI .
Maybe the writers could base a series around him being on holiday in Vegas – because he’s so infallible, all-conquering and clearly a superior being, he solves at least one case a day, so a fortnight’s holiday should be ample time to build an entire series !

@Caledonian Jim – Horatio is awesome but I think he’s better off in Miami. It just fits him well. Vegas seems to be the more darker series and I dont know if Horatio would do well in that setting.
Fishburne is a solid actor. If you’ve ever seen the version of Othello that he starred in you wouldn’t doubt his ability to bring intensity to the show. I’m a bit curious as to how fans would take to him. Can anyone recall a black man taking the lead for a popular series that wasn’t a comedy?
From all the CSI shows I’ve seen, I would have to say that CSI NY is the one that I would consider getting into if I had the time. Gary Sinise and supporting cast are awesome.
@Polaris671 – CSI Vegas is just the most popular television show ever to hit the tube. It would be interesting to say the least. I’ve never been a fan of NY. Its always been Vegas first and Miami second.
I think they should promote Catherine Willows and bring in new subordinates.

@Mo – That doesn’t sound like a bad idea at all!
Grissom was my favorite and the reason I watched the show. Out of the choices, I would have to go with Fishburne.
This is such sad news. I love all 3 CSI’s for different reasons and William Petersen was the reason I liked CSI: Crime Scene Investigation (called CSI: Las Vegas in Ireland). There have already been so many changes like Gary Dourdan leaving and the rumour (or did it happen already) that George Eads is leaving. It’s just not going to be the same :( I almost wish they’d just cancel the show rather than continue with what’s left of it.
And I especially hope they don’t bring in some big-wig like Laurence Fishburne to play the lead. I think the reason I liked William Peterson was because I didn’t know him as anything but Gil Grissom. But that could just me being resistant to change.
That is a great video player btw.

@fragileheart – Thanks Reg. I like the Video Player myself. ;)
Well we all know it’s Fishburne now but I don’t really like his character – he is the dept head but all the staff have to teach him what is going on… I don’t get it. Maybe watching a few more will get me warming up to him but I doubt it.
