Artist Review – Rebel Lion (Guam)

Rebel Lion LogoOne of Guam’s hottest reggae bands, Rebel Lion has taken the local radio waves and music scene by storm. With such musical talents as Jon Palau and Chris Unchango, I am truly hoping for an album release in the near future.

So far I’ve heard two outstanding singles released on Guam’s local airwaves. One includes Palau’s acoustic ballad Wishful Thinkin’ and the second is a anti-war statement performed by Unchango entitled Bossman. Both songs can be heard regularly on Guam’s local radio station I94 FM.

Palau’s Wishful Thinkin’ is an excellent ballad who’s lyrics carry a powerful yet simple meaning. With the use of a single acoustic guitar and a clean skank behind it, this was definitely one of my favorite tracks produced by Palau in recent memory. Its one of those few local tunes that can easily take you away from reality even if for just a few minutes. Definitely a favorite of mine.

Unchango is another incredible talent that has seemed to go unnoticed until recently. When I first heard Bossman played over the local airwaves, I was immediately immersed in the music, and the hook in particular held my attention. As with Wishful Thinkin’ it was the simplicity of Bossman’s lyrics and the acoustic guitar that made this song appealing to the ears.

Although Palau and Unchango may lead the band vocally, its impossible not to mention the rest of Rebel Lion. It’s the entire group that make Rebel Lion one of hottest bands to catch live here on the island. According to their myspace the band has a total of eight members who collectively have a ton of music experience behind them.

Rebel Lion Members include:

    Jon Palau- Lead Vocals
    Chris Unchango- Vocals
Shawn San Nicolas- Lead Guitar & Vocals
    Vince- Bass
    Tabs- Rhythm Guitar
    Pete Alvarez- Percussions
    Brian Machie- Drums
    Ty- Keyboard

Right now I don’t have an updated list of venue’s that they play at, but as soon as I get the information I’ll be sure to post them here. Whether your visiting Guam or are a resident of the island, you have to find time to check this band out. Their vibes are always positive and you will leave wanting more long after the band has done playing.

For now enjoy the sounds of Rebel Lion! These guys are truly gifted and their music speaks for itself. I know I’ll be one of the first to scoop up an album if they decide to release one.
