Hellboy II-The Golden Army (Theaters)

1$ (GA)_AW_[18310] Hellboy II.qxd:1$_V?_Job NameHellboy II – The Golden Army was a fabulous sequel to the original film which was released in 2004. In fact, I thought this sequel was far more grittier, action packed, and entertaining than the first.

What impressed me most about this film was Guillermo del Toro’s close attention to details. Hellboy II was a pure monsterfest with Guillermo relying heavily on make-up artists, puppeteers and model designers rather than solely on the CGI creatures which we have become so accustomed to over the years. Yes, there were some sequences that required the use of CGI, but I really appreciated Guillermo’s respect for the pioneer of puppetry (Jim Henson), and his use of the dying art in this movie.

The storyline was also done very well and the premise of Hellboy II was very straightforward. However, there were some problems with the pacing of the movie and it did seem uneven and disconnected at times. The comic relief however made up for this quite well and there is one particular scene in the film that had the entire audience rolling for at least a couple minutes.

Overall, this film is an excellent addition to what is becoming a summer of blockbuster superhero films. I definitely enjoyed this movie and would highly recommend this to be seen in theaters.
