Will Smith has always been one of my favorite actors to watch on the bigscreen. Since his appearance as Mike Lowrey in Bad Boys back in ’95, I have loyally watched every film he has appeared in. Unfortunately, Smith chose the wrong film to star in this year. During a summer where blockbuster superhero films have dominated the box office, Hancock completely fumbled and flopped.
The premise of the storyline was a really promising one. Something out of the box and different from the rest. However, with such poor execution and a lack of an antagonist for that true superhero experience, this film was just not very good.
I thought Smith did his best to make the film as entertaining as possible, but even with his charm and genuine humor, he could not save it from mediocracy. I would rank Hancock right there beside Wild Wild West. One of Smith’s missteps throughout his otherwise phenomenal career.
To be completely honest with you, I’d recommend you skip this film altogether and save your money for Hell Boy II and The Dark Knight. I have a very strong feeling that the Dark Knight will in fact surpass Spider-Man in the race for all time USA Box Office sales. Mark your calendars for July 18th!
Synopsis:
A hard-drinking lush finds himself thrust into superhero mode in director Peter Berg’s unconventional look at the private life of a crime-fighter. Will Smith stars as the embittered do-gooder whose lifestyle is more akin to a rock star than a role model, and who has grown as disillusioned with his once-admiring public as they have of him. – Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide
Hope you’re enjoying your US trip. Like I said 6 months ago, Dark Knight, best movie ever? :P
@Michael- I actually got home a couple days ago. Just need to catch up with over 30 drafts on posts I wanted to talk about regarding my vacation. Hopefully I remember them all…
I dont know about the Dark Knight being the best movie ever… But sales wise.. It could be the best comic book superhero movie ever.
And I thought this movie was good. Thanks for warning us. He he. I’ll probably just buy a pirated DVD just to satisfy my curiosity.
Hancock looks like interesting spin on the latest superhero movie craze… if nothing else at least Will Smith tends to be pretty funny
Yesterday I watched the trailer, this is nice movies cos Will Smith also is my favorite actor.

Thanks for the review! After reading so many negative reviews about Hancock, I finally decided to skip this movie. But I do have a dilemma in what to watch this weekend: Wanted, Kung-Fu Panda or Get Smart? Any suggestions?

Still haven’t gotten the chance to look at this movie – tried watching online but it took forever to download. But the word on the streets is that this movie not all that and it’s not one of Will Smith best screen performances.

Laarni – I heard some others liked it as well. It just wasn’t what I expected i guess.
You were right about The Dark Knight beating Superman 3, good call!
I do want to see Hancock but now I’m a little wary of shelling out the cash if it’s only as good (or as bad) as Wild Wild West. Might be a wait for DVD thing.

Hancock had a lot of potential, it could have been this summers Darkman in only they had thrown in that moronic twist.

@Film – I have to agree with you. I went opening night hoping that the casting of Smith would have created a great film. However, that stupid ending really ruined it for me.
