With the fourth quarter of the Kings versus Lakers game winding down, and the Western Conference first seed secured, I have no doubt in my mind that Kobe Bryant outright deserves to be the 2008 NBA’s Most Valuable Player.
In years past, Kobe’s name has always appeared on the polls, but the Lakers were a .500 team, and his individual statistics were never enough to garner the votes needed to win the award. This year is completely different. Kobe’s statistics have gone down (particularly in scoring) and he relinquished his two year reign as scoring champ to Lebron James. But who really cares?
Stats are a thing of the past for Mr. Bryant and it seems he has finally realized what it takes for his team to win. The trust he had in young Andrew Bynum and the rest of his team early in the season has translated not only into a playoff bound team, but into a championship caliber team. With the addition of Pau Gasol, Kobe Bryant and the Lakers are legitimate title contenders and most of it has to do with Bryant’s unselfishness and leadership this season.
The fact that he has played the entire 2nd half of the season with a broken pinky finger and torn ligament makes this season even more magnificent. Kobe truly has the heart of a warrior.
With the #1 seed in this years wild wild West, the Pacific Conference title, and another all-star season in the books, it would be a total disgrace not to see Kobe Bryant win an award he actually earned and deserves.

This is a regular question, not a diss- does Kobe win MVP if no Pau?

Kobe was winning since the season started. I believe they were 9-8 and went on a surge to 25-11. Bynum goes down, we pick up Gasol and continue where we left off. I owe this season much more to the bench of the Lakers than anything else. Kobe’s trust in his bench and teammates made a huge difference this year.
Kobe’s been the most consistent throughout the entire year with and without Gasol. So yes, he still wins the MVP. There was even a stretch of games when Pau wasn’t in the lineup and Kobe had to take more of the load and score.
Golden State didn’t make it eh? Tough season for them for sure. Too bad they didn’t play in the East this season.
Yeah, I mean w/the lakers lost against the likes grizzlies, bobcats, kings, and any other weak teams its obvious that LA still have the last laugh… and certainly Kobe would so much also get the last laugh against CP3

well mel, I think they won when it counted most. The last stretch of games against the Hornets, Spurs, and Kings. They knew what was at stake. Home court all throughout the western playoffs.
btw, although Im a die hard Laker fan, I actually had Paul winning it most of this season. It took awhile for me to change my mind!!!
i’m not a b-ball fan anymore, but this is good!

First of all, awesome site pare!
Losses to Memphis, Charlotte, etc. were just products of physical and mental fatigue, especially since Pau was out with an injury. In the end, when they had to prove a point (last games with Spurs and Hornets), they won.
My 2 cents worth on this topic is written at http://www.lakerstoday.com/lakers-commentary/mvp-debate/
