Akeelah and the Bee (DVD)

_1137265214 Akeelah and the Bee was an excellent film. Hollywood definately needs to make more movies like this. The storyline was superb and very original, the cast was phenomenal, and the message conveyed by the film was incredibly powerful. This was definately one of the better films I’ve watched all year. If you have not watched this yet, now is the time to pick it up.

Disclaimer: This film is not recommended if your watching with a group of guys. lol. I actually think it would be kind of…. This is a flick to watch with your kids, your significant other, or with your parents-n-laws to show them you have a “good” side.

Synopsis:

Eleven year-old Akeelah Anderson’s life is not easy: her father is dead, her mom ignores her, her brother runs with the local gangbangers. She’s smart, but her environment threatens to strangle her aspirations. Responding to a threat by her school’s principal, Akeelah participates in a spelling bee to avoid detention for her many absences. Much to her surprise and embarrassment, she wins. Her principal asks her to seek coaching from an English professor named Dr. Larabee for the more prestigious regional bee. As the possibility of making it all the way to the Scripps National Spelling Bee looms, Akeelah could provide her community with someone to rally around and be proud of — but only if she can overcome her insecurities and her distracting home life. She also must get past Dr. Larabee’s demons, and a field of more experienced and privileged fellow spellers.

  1. Sounds pretty good. I think I’m mostly “good side” because most of the movies I’ve seen with a group of guys aren’t very memorable. Except for any guys I’ve watched a Western with. Best genre ever.

  2. i’ve never heard of that movie before. hm. hey trench! i hope you do a review of the last kiss when it comes out. okay, i am plugging the movie only because of zach braff and the fact that he occupies a space on my myspace. haha. but it should be good.

  3. actually, no. i actually have a haloscan account. but since no one outside of melo is brave enough to write, i put it away. but i’ll put it back, just for you trench. lol.

  4. Thanks for the review babe! I need more DVDs to watch in my room since I only get 3 irish Channels on the TV in my room and they don’t always have good shows on. :D

  5. What do you mean “guys shouldn’t watch this”. It should be guys watching something like this, that’s the whole problem with gender politics. It’s okay for a woman to watch something stereotypically “male”, but it’s almost unheard of for love and passion to be watched by men. Ughhh . . . right.

Despite my sociological commentary, I do appreciate the review. I just get fired up about gender politics.

  6. I have only seen this movie on posters, and I guess from the start, I had a feeling it was going to be those family-oriented, “Aww!”-ish, feel-good movies. Based on this review, I guess my gut proved right.
Nonetheless, I would not mind seeing it. Thanks for the review!

  7. @reggie- No problem. Catch the film! Its a good one.

@April- I didnt mean it in that way. haha. Sorry if I offended you. Its for everyone, but I just find it strange if I sit down with the boyz to watch a film like this. Its more of a family movie. I’d rather watch a football game or the NBA finals with the guys..

@Marz- See the film. Its a really good one!
