The Most Valuable Player

kobe2_195 Recently, a young man by the name of Salvador Torres lost his mother. What hurt the most? He was not able to attend his mothers funeral in Mexico because he was sick. She had been there for him throughout his entire therapy and recovery process, and now he could not mourn and pray for his deceased mother. Salvador had leukemia and his family refused to take him to Mexico in fear that he may get sick while traveling. On the day of his mothers funeral, when things looked bleak and everything seemed to crash down on him, the most amazing thing happened. The Make a Wish Foundation made his dream of meeting his favorite basketball star come true. Salvador met his basketball idol, Kobe Bryant.

Kobe spent hours with him. Playing video games and talking. In the end he took him to a private basketball court to shoot around. Kobe taught him how to properly crossover, shoot a jumper, and squeeze by defenders. They played a game of H-O-R-S-E, and if you watched the feature, Salvador shot the lights out of that court. There was just so much joy in the kid’s eyes it was truly unbelievable.

It made me realize the power a person can make in a childs life if you just take the time to spend with them. Kobe Bryant gave up just a few hours of his life, and he saved the day and perhaps even the life of a child. That makes all the difference in the world. Thanks Kobe. Thanks Make a Wish. On that day Kobe, you were Salvador’s most valuable player.

  1. That’s so sad! But very nice of Kobe to do. I would have never thought he would do that…he always has seemed so egotistical.

  2. The Make A Wish foundation does indeed remind people that in spite of adversity and hardship, there is always a glimmer of hope out there. I think I heard about this story, if not, something similar to it. Either way, thanks for sharing. =)

  3. Meg: Alot of people think Kobe is egotistical. I post about him alot here, to show that even people who make mistakes can learn from them. Kobe may have saved this child just by showing up and spending time with him. Thats “REAL” right there. His rape case really tarnished his image, but everyone makes mistakes, even Kobe Bryant. He’s only human. Im just glad he is taking a pro-active approach and doing things that are postive instead of dwelling on the negative energy and perception many people have of him.

    Marz,

TheMake A Wish Foundation is awesome. My wife and I have donated several times to their cause.

  4. i admire athletes who go out of their way to spend their time with people like Salvador. Kobe’s act can’t be measured but i’m sure it’s worth more than millions to that kid. another athlete who has done lots of this kind of activities is Alonzo Mourning.

love the new theme! don’t go and change it, aight?
