The thing is, A&M invented the 12th Man tradition in 1922. About 62 years before Seattle decided to copy it. The University has sent Seattle letters asking them to cease and desist for several years now, but it came to a head when official merchandise was discovered on the Seahawks website with "12th Man".

A&M owns a U.S. trademark on the phrase. It’s a brand name. Kind of like how I can't start putting out my own stuff with a big Nike swoosh on it.

By the way, I don’t buy that most people in Seattle weren’t aware of where it came from. Try searching for the phrase on Google. A&M is one of the 5 largest universities in the United States. Their football traditions aren’t exactly a big secret.

I'm not one to pick fights in comment threads, but who said that anyone in Seattle was aware of Texas A&M's tradition of calling their fans the 12th man? I certainly had never heard of it until they started the uproar over it.

I just think the whole thing is silly. I was disappointed with the Super Bowl for many reasons. For the two weeks leading up to the game, there seemed to be nothing but press for the Steelers. It was ungodly slanted. During the game itself count the number of times they showed a Pittsburgh player holding the Lombardi trophy during those promos and then count the number of Seahawks that did. I was amazed by the sheer bias. And don't get me started on the officiating. It was horrible.

Seattle obviously didn't play well enough to win the game despite the adversity so I'm not going to blame it entirely on the officials, and I don't believe there was a conspiracy.

But it is clear to me that there was huge media bias both before and during the game, and if the questionable calls had been called right the first time, I don't believe there would have been "one for the thumb".

I noticed this when I was watching the superbowl... in fact I made my husband pause it on the tv.

Did you notice in that last picture... the one with Troy Polamalu, that you can see the reflection of the photographer in the trophy?

OKAY... so I know i'm nuts lol. my hubby gave me the dirtiest look like "OMG WE'RE WATCHING THE SUPERBOWL AND YOU'RE STILL BRINGING UP PHOTOGRAPHY"

But I thought it was neat :)

I was glad Seattle lost. Maybe now they can come up with their own name for their fans, instead of copying one that somebody else invented almost 100 years ago. That said, I really like the city.

Kris was rooting for the Seahawks, because they have never been to the Superbowl, and as for me? Well, I was studying in the library, heh.
