This was a recent topic on the forums I run, and decided to post my thoughts about it. Im a Catholic and I still practice my religion, but Im very open about ideas including science and technology.
I’ve read many articles using the bible to back up creationism. I am a catholic and I do believe that many of the events in the Bible did happen. I believe that people wrote down and documented events in the past. I also believe that people also learn from mistakes in the past. I dont see why we can’t use Historical Events to teach people something. The Bible is not only the world best seller, but it is also one of the most used books to help people teach morality. History and experiences teach people. Experiences are used to educate others. Thats why our parents try to teach us right from wrong. They’ve experienced things, and dont want us to make the same mistakes. At least thats what they are suppose to be for. Why not teach history to Christian Followers? Teach morals using important Historic Events.
Why the bible can’t be taken literally? It comes down to the simple fact that men often exaggerate things. Thoughout the history of time, men alter fact to what they believe is the truth. Remember, the Bible was written by men. Even if inspired by a higher power,a man is far from perferct. So the bible cannot be perfect. Unless the Creator himself threw the bible from the clouds and handwrote it himself, Im not buyin that the Bible is ALL truth.
This is why I still dont believe in this 6 days of creation. What if this is an exaggerated story? Exaggerated History? What if the Creator did set off evolution. Millions of years of change. The writers of the Bible wanted to exaggerate this and shorten Evolution to 6 days with the 7th day for the Creator to rest. They wanted to make it more of a MIRACLE! People always exaggerate things to make things bigger than it actually is. Why not the story of creation? Impossible? Illogical? I dont think so. Now I can accept the story of creation a bit more. So which is correct now? Evolutionism of Creationism? Both? haha. The Creator sparked the start of Evolution. Eventually, men and women walked the earth after several billion years and because their brains had advanced, he was able to inspire them to write a story about his creation of our universe. Could be? Bullshit?
Another reason I dont buy creationism is the simple fact that if man was made in the exact image of the creator, why would man need to evolve. I dont see any need to. Why would the survival of the fittest be needed. There would be no need for survival because we would ALL be made perfect. Created in the creators image. Think about it? If we were an exact image of the Creator would their be any need for change? Sharks have survived millions of years with no change. They evolved into a fish that no longer needed to change. The Perfect Ocean Predator.
Yet we human beings all have imperfections, both physically and mentally. Those imperfections are slowly eraticated with physical change in our genes and through learning. Physical changes occur in all creatures. If changes are not made, they die out. If humans do not advance, we do not survive. We’ve come up with methods of survival. Our brains have advanced. Our bodies have become stronger with medicine and suppliments. Technology! Evolution! THE PROCESS OF DEVELOPMENT! It exists! Its fact!
Have you seen the movie Inherit the Wind? It’s a great movie that deals with exactly this issue. I recommend you rent it if you can get a hold of it…it’s kind of an old movie.
my answer to this is that, yes it’s true that we were created in the image of God..and the first man & woman were perfect, but because of sin, they both became aware of their “nakedness”, they hid from God and put on clothes made of leaves..before sin, they were innocent..and after sin, both had to leave the Garden of Eden, they had to undergo pain & suffering..everything God made during creation was tarnished by sin.
hmmmm…interesting..
i gotta say, i agree with a lot of the things you said.
gc, I’ll definately look into that movie. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve been facinated with these types of topics. haha. The joy of getting older!
Evolution Rules! No seriously, I think this is a viable explanation.
how come you’re so smart!
that’s my clever brother beyotches!
I completely agree with you…it is exactly the way I see it!!!
Many creationists concentrate too much on the 6 days of creation. While I agree that it did happen in six days, I think the more important event to look to is the flood. This is an event that is recognized by nearly every culture in the entire world. They all agree that it was worldwide, and most of them agree also that it included a single, favored family, and it was the result of God’s judgment. Many also agree as to the general date of the flood.
The record of the flood is the period from the Pre-Cambrian/Cambrian boundary to the K/T boundary. These are both worldwide geologic unconformities. The fossil record is the record of ecosystems which were destroyed by the flood (moving from ocean bottom to land-dwelling creatures). The flood is probably the most well- and widely-attested event in history.
If you are interested in looking at the topic further, I have several blogs which I discuss the subject:

trench – Apparently you’re not in the know-all ;). Creationism died long ago and was replaced by Intelligent Design. Apparently, this isn’t the same thing. *cough*BS*cough*
I love these things but there’s almost no reason to debate people because they will absolutely, no matter how much they tell you they have an “open mind” will look in another direction.
Oh and one last tidbit of evolution since most IDists thing that Evolution is perposterious…just look at birth. It goes from a fertilized egg (cell) into multiple cells, into a fetus, into a bigger fetus and finally a human. If that isn’t proof that evolution exists, I don’t know what is.
haha Kyle this was posted over six months ago after I had a big arguement over it in my forums at shoyoroll.com Apparantly, someone ressurected it from the dead… haha
It was atop recent comments :P
Ressurecting stuff is cool, get with the program ;)
