The Da Vinci Code

The Da Vinci Code hits the bigscreen!

The Da Vinci Code written by Dan Brown has been ranked #1 on Amazon.com and was the best seller according to the New York Times for over 32 weeks. It also inspired several television stations to put on one hour specials to investigate the controversial claims made in this fictional tale.

Almost three years after its original publication, this book still remains as one of the top sellers for adult readers due to its mix of storytelling and speculation. 25 million books in over 44 languages! Not too bad eh?

The book has done so well that a movie has been set to be released in the month of May 2006. Tom Hanks has won the role as Robert Langdon, the Harvard symobologist who ends up in this wild chase to discover a truth about the Holy Grail that could turn Christianity upside down.

The production of this movie has already created a stir amongst the public, in particular, the Catholic Church. Their have been pleas to have the movie and book boycott, saying that it is Anti-Christian.

Cardinal Bertone has urged Catholics on to shun the book like “rotten food” and branded it as “lies”.

He called on Catholic bookstores to take the thriller off their shelves and accused Brown of “deplorable” behavior.

“This book is a sack full of lies against the church, against the real history of Christianity and against Christ himself.”

I have been a Catholic all my life, and yet I read the entire book in under 24 hours. The book combined some historical fact with a very compelling storyline. I couldn’t put the book down. Although I enjoyed the reading, I also understood it as fiction. A story that was imagined in the mind of a author. In my opinion, there was no harm reading it at all. Im still a catholic and I’ve not deviated from my faith. You can bet I’ll be at the opening of the movie next summer! See you there!
